Day 16: Stay

“If not for me, for the boy you’ve helped to raise...”

After what happened in Omashu and later in the Fire Nation during the events of Smoke and Shadow, Mai was fed up with her parents’ inability to protect her little brother. So Mai took Tom Tom, and left for the Earth Kingdom. She found a remote village and sent him to school, and gave him some supplementary combat lessons on the side where the school was slacking. Everything was fine until a certain bounty hunter came to collect some debts Ukano had racked up.

They made a deal. Mai would find the wanted man and June would collect the bounty. While Mai did the hunting, June watched Tom Tom and became “the fun auntie”. She found peace in the farm work, the cooking, the sweeping, and every few days, Mai returned with a wanted person, and June collected the bounty. 

It took some time, but June understood why Mai left the Fire Nation behind and retreated to this remote village. It was exhausting to spend day after day fighting to survive when one could just relax, watch the grass sway, and Tom Tom playing yo-yo with school friends in the pasture. 

And even after the debt was paid, Mai asked Jun to stay...
