Mini-review:

My expectations for this drama were very high, since the original trilogy is my favorite live-action adaptation of a manga, but it actually delivered. And the reason is simple: the creative team made all the right choices. They picked completely new character archetypes for the ensemble, so the story never felt like a rehash or a half-assed cash grab. The cameos are also inserted in smart ways that actually help push the plot forward (and they happened more often than I expected, too!). The entire cast of newcomers does a fantastic job in getting you invested; I just know many of them will lead the next generation of Japanese actors. On top of that, the production values are above average when compared to other J-dramas, courtesy of having a lot of the original movies' crew involved. So yeah, Chihayafuru: Full Circle is a more than welcome return to the karuta world.
