Spin magazine, June 1989
32 years ago, on this day (June 26), Johnny attended the première of “Great Ball of Fire!” at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City, New York.
> Johnny meets Winona Ryder.
“Great Balls of Fire!” is a 1989 biographical film directed by Jim McBride and starring Dennis Quaid as the American singer and pianist often described as "rock n' roll's first great wild man and one of the most influential pianists of the twentieth century” Jerry Lee Lewis. The movie is based on a biography by Murray M. Silver Jr. and Myra Lewis, best known for her controversial marriage at the age of 13 to Jerry Lee Lewis, who is her first cousin (once removed). In this movie, Myra is played by Winona Ryder, and the day of the premiere is known as the day Johnny and Winona Ryder “met” for the first time.
Although he knew her movies and she knew his, they never met each other in person and this didn’t even happened on the “Balls of Fire!” premiere. So why this day is the day they met?
On that night, Johnny and Winona only spotted each other from across the lobby. Winona said she was getting a Coca-Cola, while Johnny was deeper: “It was a classic glance. Like the zoom lenses in West Side Story, and everything else gets foggy.” Winona remembers that it wasn’t a long moment, but “it was suspended” but Johnny “knew then.” meaning that he had found the love of his life. And this was the “meeting”. They didn’t talk to each other, or anything. They only saw each other. It took months until, a mutual friend of them, Josh Richman, introduce them. Winona knew how shy Johnny was and both knew that there was something between them once both had similar tastes for music, books and movies; Few weeks later, they had their first date in a party at the Hollywood Hills home of counterculture guru Dr. Timothy Leary, who is also Winona’s godfather. Sometime later they began dating and in March 1990, started the filming of the first movie together as Edward and Kim in “Edward Scissorhands” .
Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever... 💔
