the thing about the homestuck fandom is they will jump through hurdles trying to convince everyone that hussie saying “yeah sure” to a headcanon being canon somehow holds more weight than things that appeared in spin-off material like pesterquest and the epilogues/hs2

Big big agree!!!! God, the incessant arguing over it is so stupid in my opinion.

If you like June, awesome! Me too!!!! But please don’t attack people over preferring John. Especially considering Trans Guy John Egbert has been a pretty prevalent headcanon for many for years. It’s brought a lot of comfort to a lot of trans masculine people since the early years of Homestuck.

What makes all the fighting especially dumb to me is that... Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t June not appeared or been hinted at even once in The Epilogues/Homestuck^2? Because I remember that being a thing. Last I checked, the only thing that happened regarding June’s canonicity within those fanventures is Hussie saying they would make it happen. Which is just about as good as J.K. Rowling saying that Dumbledore is gay.

Sorry, not sorry. It’s... Genuinely the same thing to me, except this time it’s not an author backpedaling to seem more “woke,” it’s an author hosting a competition, a fan winning it, requesting trans representation (more power to them, honestly,) and the author legitimately just not fulfilling it past a “yeah, sure, we’ll add that!”

Calling people who prefer John “transphobic” is a bit... Much, because of this. Again, as I said, Trans Guy John has been a beloved headcanon for years. I’ve seen people get knocked around for preferring Trans Guy John, even though they’ve had that headcanon long before June was ever even implied to maybe exist one day, far beyond that stupid Toblerone competition, and well before The Epilogues or Homestuck^2 even existed. The argument is more time blind than me! And that’s saying something!

I love June, I really, really do. But I love John, too! It doesn’t have to be a federal issue. If you prefer one over the other, that’s totally cool! But harassing people over your preference or their preference isn’t cool. Look, if someone is being genuinely transphobic about June, that clearly warrants calling them out, but... Liking John... Isn’t someone being transphobic about June.

Above all, Homestuck^2 and The Epilogues are fanventures, guys. If you want to adopt them into your personal canon, that’s great, and more power to you. But, like, objectively speaking, they aren’t actual canon. That’s... That’s their whole premise. That’s the entire deal with Homestuck^2 and The Epilogues. It’s... It’s in the name of the website. Please don’t attack people over preferring John because “June is canon so you have to respect it,” that’s just... Blatantly not true.

Inversely... People who prefer John... Please don’t attack anyone who prefers June because “John is canon so you have to respect it,” because that... Doesn’t really matter? A headcanon is a headcanon, man. If someone derives joy and value out of June, please, for the love of god, let them have fun with it!

Unfortunately that AO3 comments post did remind me that one of the comments I've gotten and probably won't respond to was someone being positive about my fic but referred to John as "Jegbert".

And while it's an AU and John isn't referred to by name (yet), he's referred to as a guy multiple times, so there is no reason to question whether or not he is John.

But it is also currently my only comment on a years old fic that maybe one day I would like to get back to, and it's nice seeing someone enjoy it!

But gosh dang it sucks to see people refer to my John specifically as "Jegbert" rather than just a way they tag bookmarks for organizational purposes or something.

You know I (half) joke that one of the reasons for the "don't tag as june" request is because people shipping June with a character instead of John changes if the ship is mm, mf, or ff

But June shipped with Roxy stays the same lmao
