Anna Sewell was born on March 30, 1820 in Norfolk, England. The Sewell family was Quaker and Anna was primarily home-schooled. Her mother, Mary, was a successful children’s book author. Anna is best known for her only novel, the classic Black Beauty published in 1877.
One of the best loved animal stories ever written, the dramatic and heartwarming Black Beauty is told by the magnificent horse himself, from his idyllic days on a country squire's estate to his harsh fate as a London cab horse. No one can ever forget the gallant Black Beauty, a horse with a white star on his forehead and a heart of unyielding courage.
“There is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach them to be good and kind to man and beast, it is all a sham.” - Anna Sewell
