92 years ago, on June 3,1924, Franz Kafka died of laryngeal tuberculosis at the age of 40. The official cause of death was starvation: the condition of Kafkaās throat made eating too painful, and since parenteral nutrition had not yet been invented, there was no way to feed him.
Kafka was editingĀ āA Hunger Artistā on his death bed, a story whose composition he had begun before his throat closed to the point he could not take any more nourishment. His body was brought back to Prague where he was buried on June 11, 1924, in the New Jewish Cemetery in Prague. There he rests with his parents, Hermann and Julie Kafka.
Today we acknowledge the passing of our friend, but also express gratitude for the gifts he left us in the form of beautiful short stories, novels, and letters. What would our lives be without Kafka? Cheers to you, my friend, and many, many thanks.
