Junior Cook: Born July 22, 1934

Born in Pensacola, Florida 86 years ago, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook was strong, rhythmically forceful soloist in the traditions of his influences, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Stitt. His personality, though, was quiet and pensive, as this Francis Wolff photo captures. Best known for his long stints with Horace Silver, Blue Mitchell and the quintet he co-led with Bill Hardman, Cook was an underappreciated original on his instrument.
