January 10, 2015 JUNIOR MALANDA Bernard Malanda-Adje (nicknamed Junior Malanda) was a Belgian professional footballer who last played for German club VfL Wolfsburg as a defensive midfielder. On 10 January 2015 Malanda was travelling in the backseat of a Volkswagen Touareg on the A2 near Porta Westfalica in northern Germany to catch a flight to a training camp in South Africa. Apparently without outside influence the car cleared a guardrail on the side of the road, crashed into a tree and Malanda was catapulted from the seat. The police confirmed Malanda wasn't wearing his seat-belt resulting in him being thrown forward at the collision and being killed instantly. He was 20. According to the police report the crash was caused due to inappropriate speed (Malanda’s agent stated that his car was caught speeding 21 times in the last 6 months of which it was faster than 200 km/h in ten instances and reported that Malanda was almost never driving the car himsel) for the very rainy weather. Malanda's funeral was held on 20 January at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in his native Brussels. It drew over 1000 mourners.

Bas Dost goal vs Bayern Munich, 1/30/2015: Junior

This thriller saw Die Wolfe line up against the perennial league leaders, this time sporting black armbands. Symbolic in a literal sense, but also carrying an unfathomable weight; this match was for more than just points. This was the first match since the tragic death of Wolfsburg midfielder Junior Malanda.

By the end of regulation time, this match would also be Bayern’s first defeat in the league since April 2014. The gap between first and second grew even smaller (though it ultimately would not be overturned), and this match played by grieving players in front of thousands of grieving fans was a stream of light pouring from a dark cloud. 

The underdogs, led by a stoic and effective Kevin De Bruyne (a close friend of the late Malanda), completely dismembered Bayern. After opening the scoring in the first four minutes from a pass from De Bruyne, Bas Dost’s volley from the edge of the box was one of four goals in a victory that meant the world. Grief, while heavy and unwieldy, can be a powerful weapon.

Kevin De Bruyne (now at Manchester City), Ricardo Rodriguez (now at AC Milan), Daniel Caligiuri and Naldo (both at Schalke), members of this Wolfsburg team of old, piled atop a jubilant and empowered Bas Dost (now at Sporting). Despite their divergent directions, surely they all carry Junior Malanda with them.

Question: After the goal you pointed to the green heart with the number 19 in it on the Wolfsburg kit. A reference to the late Junior Malanda, the team-mate you lost earlier this season? De Bruyne: That was definitely in remembrance of Junior Malanda. Everyone knows that Junior was like a little brother to me. I helped him a lot in Wolfsburg. He is always in my thoughts, always on my mind. Even if thinking of him weighs heavy on my heart, Junior will always be with me. (x) (x)

auch wenn es immer zum Gedenken und somit zu traurigen Anlässen ist, die Änderung der Schweigeminute zur Klatschminute ist finde ich sehr positiv

Heuchelei ist die Tugend des Feiglings

Eigentlich voller Vorfreude auf die Eröffnung der Bundesliga-Rückrunde, ließ ich vor dem Spiel Wolfsburg-Bayern weihevolle Ansprachen und künstliche Beileidsbekundungen über mich ergehen. Hintergrund: Am 10. Januar verunglückte Wolfsburg-Profi Junior Malanda bei einem Verkehrsunfall tödlich. Im Stadion sollte vor Anpfiff der Partie dessen gedacht werden. Meine Stimmung war schnell auf dem Tiefpunkt. Weil mir diese kollektive, an Gruppenzwang erinnernde Heuchelei zuwider ist.

Was zunächst egoistisch anmutet, ist vielmehr eine Abkehr. Abkehr gegenüber allen Feiglingen, die jetzt in den monotonen Chor all derjenigen einstimmen, die ach so tief betroffen sind. Aber bitte nur die eine Minute lang, in der das erwartet wird. Danach ist ja alles wieder gut und wir können weiter Spaß haben.

De facto sterben weltweit an jedem Tag unzählige Menschen, die keine Stars sind, nicht in der Öffentlichkeit stehen. Um die trauern wir auch nicht. Weil wir sie nicht kennen, keinen Bezug zu ihnen haben und ihr Schicksal – auch aus Selbstschutz – nicht in unser Leben lassen. Oft sind diese No-Names völlig schuldlos an ihrem Ableben. Junior Malanda war – kurz bevor der Unfallfahrzeug von der Straße abkam – nicht angeschnallt. Vermutlich bei Tempo 250, ein starker Sturm zog diesem Zeitpunkt an Norddeutschland vorüber. Sein Tod war also keinesfalls unausweichlich.

Das mindert keinesfalls die Tragik in seinem Fall. Ein Schock fraglos für alle, die einen direkten Bezug zu ihm hatten. Familie, Freunde, Mannschaftskameraden. Aber um Gottes Willen: Lasst unbeteiligten Fans die Freude am Sport – und dem Verstorbenen seine Würde. Denn nur ehrliche Trauer ist angemessene Trauer.
