Linda A. Morabito, worked at NASA and discovered the first proof of volcanoes on Jupiter's moon, Io, in 1979. She was studying a photo taken by Voyager 1 and when she performed the processing on the image she noted a crescent from an eruption off the limb of the moon. This was the first time active volcanism was found outside of planet Earth.
