I know the theory of mind thing when it comes to psychiatry is pretty extreme as they apply it to autism, but like

I can’t tell you how many times I have posted something and just assumed that people would understand something that I didn’t put in it. Like, the addendum I recently added to the “queer as trauma” post -- I just assumed that people would know that I respect that people have gone through trauma even though they find my identity triggering, and that I still have to maintain my stance as a matter of self respect and respect for other queer people.

I can’t tell you how many times people have called me out, for lack of a better term, for something I didn’t put in a post and I just got short with them becauseI was like “??? yes???? I mean I assumed you’d know I knew that????”

and like the only psychologist I’ve met who actually sincerely believes I am autistic despite my eye contact thing has found I have a sort of borderline case of the theory of mind thing. Like she read out a paragraph from a text that they use to help diagnose autism, and apparently autistic people interpret it one way and allistic people interpret it another way, and it’s due to theory of mind. And I didn’t interpret it either way -- I just got stuck on it because I was like “??? I need more information” because I could honestly see both perspectives and couldn’t decide which one was the valid one, and she found that really interesting.

(FWIW, the paragraph was from a story where there’s people swimming in the freezing cold water and there’s a thing in the water touching them, but it’s just a fish. The people stop swimming in the water. The counselor asks you why they left the water. Generally, autistic people say the water was too cold, whereas allistic people generally say it’s because there was something in the water and they didn’t know what it was. My answer was, “I honestly don’t know, did they know it was a fish or not?” because I couldn’t tell from the narrative if the people who left the water knew it was just a fish.)

IDK if people with ADHD have the theory of mind thing like autistic people do but yeah that’s definitely a Thing with me, and a good part of the reason why I get so short when people argue with me, because in my head they’re picking a fight about something I thought we both understood.
