Honestly it's been 10 years and I'm no closer to understanding that kid than I was at the beginning. No kid would say "you can't help me" and then disappear into a vent. And then he struggled to get on the shuttle while soldiers were fighting to save them. Not just the soldiers, the other civilians didn't see him either. Nobody helped him, does that seem likely at all? The way he looked up at Shepard, generating interest and ensuring that Shepard was looking.
