~Weekend Reading~

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck this week felt so looooooooong. But hey, you made it. You survived the rain and the sleet and the electrical storms and that truly terrible article about girls and sports and now it’s Friday and it’s time to bookmark some stories to read in your softpants this weekend. 

Here’s what we recommend from the local independent media this week:

Kayla Roberts at the Seattle Globalist has an incredibly important story about the struggle of female combat veterans. 

Alex Garland attended last night #Justice4Hamza rally and took some excellent photos. Clay Showalter’s are also worth a look. Police are still investigating the Somali teen’s death. 

Colin Maloney’s piece in the South Seattle Emerald about local law enforcement’s role in immigration enforcement sheds light on an issue that everyone should be at least peripherally aware of. 

And the KEXP blog has a bunch of photos and stories about their old office space, which they officially left for fancier digs this week.

A boy about my age died a few days ago. His name was Hamza Warsame. He was 17 years old. I want this community to help bring a national awareness about his death. You see, Hamza was a brilliant young man. He was a Running Start student who attended Seattle Central College. But things took a wrong turn. Hamza was invited to do a project by a white boy. Now why would I include race? Well, as you can tell by his name, Hamza was an African-American. He was a Muslim. We know that there is a lot of controversy about the Muslim community because of the attacks. But Hamza was not like that. None of my Muslim friends are. They believe to find a better life here in America just like you fellow Americans. But Hamza's dream was stripped away. Supposedly Hamza "fell" off the balcony of the white boy's apartment. But I beg to differ. People who know Hamza really well say that he was pushed off the balcony. When the Seattle Police Department took over the case, they say that it was just an accident. Now tell me, how could someone fall if there are railing to stop objects from falling off of the balcony? How can Hamza die from that "accident"? I want people to know about this particular death. Hamza Warsame did not deserve to die. We will find the peace and justice when we know the truth of his death. Till now, we will fight for him. Please use #Justice4Hamza to help us spread awareness. Thank you!

The media wants to white-out the names and the blood that was shed.

But Not here.

If nobody wants to say their name, We will.

Justice for Hamza Warsame, a 16 year-old muslim boy that was beaten and thrown off the 6th floor of a building by his fellow Seattle Central College classmates. It’s claimed that his death is a result of the Islamophobia that’s currently taking over the US & UK, amongst every other Western country. 

May he rest in Peace & receive justice.
