Woodshed . 2019 “Musicians don’t retire; they stop when there’s no more music in them.” – Louis Armstrong Growing up in a musical family has shown me the endless hours of practice, repetition and discipline that go in to playing an instrument. As a child I would often wake up in mornings to faint sound of my parents plucking away on the banjo or guitar as they worked up a new song or practiced scales over and over and over. If the morning wake up wasn’t chickens it was definitely the banjo. 🤣🙉 This piece is inspired by them and those in my life who have been dedicated to making music and the incredible persistence that goes into it. As a fiddler, having bandmates, friends and family to play with is what keeps the long practices meaningful for me. I’ve been branching out from folk and bluegrass genres into jazz standards lately- talk about endurance and patience! Sometimes life and work and all the things get prioritized over those notey practices but I’ve come to see my big WHY: to play with those I love and make new friends along the way.
