I really dislike it when people say "BUT YOU'RE MY GOOD FRIEND SO I AM GOING TO LET YOU HURT MY PEOPLE"
What the fuck. Aren't we done with being those people? Like how people of color always have to apologize for our stupid friends who do stupid shit? How many times are we going to have to play it down so that they can not be mad with us? So that we can be the indian dream, the passive non-threatening voice?
That is bullshit and its also feminization of voice.
AND like again, if this was rape? would you say "hey i love you and you're my bud, just don't do that ok yeah?" instead of "HEY YOU'RE MY FRIEND AND I AM ANGRY YOU'RE STEALING THINGS FROM MY PEOPLE"
Also, being an NDN who is my friend means being and NDN who is also NOT into facepaint.
This one time some white asshole said to me he wears dreadlocks because celtic people wore them. I told him to fuck off because no matter how true or untrue it was, fact of the matter is that these things are POLITICAL, not simply HISTORICAL. NDNs are oppressed, and white people embodying things that could be perceived as indian is kind of like a slap in the face. Because of history, but also how it is politically related to our oppression here, RIGHT THE FUCK NOW.
This is totally about some letter going around.
*I use the term NDN to refer to indigenous people of the Americas. This is because I don't identify as indigenous, but as a mixed blood andeana, chola and indigenous to the Americas. To me NDN is a form of asserting my allegiance to indigenous sovereignty and resistance to colonialism.
