Scott Watanabe is one of the artists that worked on kpop demon hunters and he recently posted on Instagram a concept art of Rumi’s dad and mom with baby Rumi. And you are right that he was not evil. The concept art shows that her parents were happy and in love with each other. It also shows that he is in his demon form so that would mean that Rumi’s mom knew he was a demon. She was not tricked or anything heinous. She knew he a demon and still pursued a relationship with him and had a baby with him. So this is the classic case of forbidden love between a demon and a human/hunter.

Simon Baek, one of the artists that worked on the film, posted a concept art of Rumi asking Celine why she killed her mom. In the comments, he said that this storyline was conceived during the early process of the story. He said that what happened was an accident and it was something related to Rumi’s dad. He said that he does not want to elaborate much since the directors might include it in the sequel.
