Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction - Juular
Man so i know i already reblogged this earlier but I just gotta scream about it for a few minutes cause i have approximately 0 people i can talk to about this irl. So I legit just heard this song for the first time today, it’s not exactly a new Devy piece but fucking hell it’s magical.
I love Devin’s approach to music, his history with it, and how he now uses it. His albums are so wildly diverse. From harder pieces off of Deconstruction like Juular and Pandemic to softer pieces like Texada and Fly from Ghost and all sorts of Ziltoidy business in between. He uses a full spectrum of sound to suit whatever he’s feeling for an album and makes it work.
But I think my favorite part of his musical career is the sheer joy and comedy he pulls from an otherwise serious grouping of genres. Prog rock and prog metal aren’t exactly known for comedic epics. They’re generally known for a more somber emotional experience from bands like Dream Theater and Symphony-X.
To see Devin perform is a treat for this exact same reason. I’ve seen dozen upon dozens of concerts and Devin is one of the only performers that looks absolutely elated to be up on stage in front of a room of people enjoying his music. Sure, he can put on the serious when the time calls for it but the goofy faces he makes, the jokes he cracks with the audience, and his massive smiles convey the most genuine joy I have ever seen from a performer.
To bring it back to this piece, I feel Juular really encapsulates a lot of elements of Devins music. It’s got the intensity right off the bat with that real primal scream at the beginning. Then you’ve got the warm, complex, signature vocals. But in the background, a polka beat layered with a drummer doing his very damndest to not faint while banging out a consistently quick line. This is all broken up by a fair bit of screaming in the chorus by Ihsahn from the band Emperor. All the while you get these very well blended snippets of a chorus, and a synthesized carnival organ sustaining the glorious pandemonium.
This is all of course wrapped up in the most electrifying assault on the senses which is the music video itself. A sly ill intended Devin putting on these airs in the face of Juular, (just Devin in a fair bit of make-up) mock playing the jug while leashed to an insanely beautiful woman. But all this, of course, would not be complete without a visit from our dear alien ambassadress Ziltoid! The intergalactic lord of coffee can bee seen briefly conducting the train and thus leading us on this happy madness.
I know maybe like 6 people will read this maybe 2 of you 6 will actually like it, hell if I’m insanely lucky one of y’all will even reblog it but it really doesn’t matter. A lot of people, old, middle aged, and young people, ask me frequently “How can you listen to music like this it’s so off-putting/aggressive/noisy.” And they aren’t wrong, it is aggressive and noisy and maybe a bit off putting to some at first, but it’s so much more than that. It’s art, it’s a crazy balancing act of thoughts, feelings, themes, melodies, harmonies, tones, and textures. It’s powerful, brazen, fun, and an absolute joy to dissect.
