My good friend from @cityyear @cityyearsanjose i gotta call her Officer Winston now, hit me while overseas,we caught up.She had been following my music career & seen my community efforts with #RonDavouxRecords #HipHopCongress l & wanted me to speak/ perform & do a #hiphop workshop for her youth group for #BlackHistorymonth at her #JuvenileDetention Center Class. It was such an honor. Its the greatest request as a Hip Hop Artist to be asked to give my time to uplift others and motivate folks to embrace their voice and potential. We talked a long time about her vision it is really impactful. For her as a Black woman its not easy to always express our struggles and pain as a people without backlash and opposition. It can be unconfortable for others and may be met with resististance and skeptism. But it's important to stand prideful in our identity and tell our own story while empowering others to do the same as they learn from others perspectives. The last 2 decades ive had the pleasure of speaking at jails ,juvenile halls, universities, Centers, stages, in many places and its one of my greatest experiences to build with folks who are in tough situations because i was once behind those walls and still could end up in that position anytime. Ill be going back more to follow up and would ❤to have other artists/activists/mentors join me. It was a Beautiful event they shared poetry ,personal stories, raps, songs, skits and visuals. We had soul food together and the officers, mentors, councilours and other artists i know all participated. I shared some of my music & let them know they are not alone or forgotten. Very inspiring. Thanks for having me. So good to see young people of all backgrounds so sharp and ready to change the world , aware, informed & not afraid to still keep love in their hearts. Also to see my fellow #cityyear alum still being the change she wishes to see.
