JXTA  Artist, rapper, designer, and founder of RiverLife Goods Greg Grease, who conducted a product design workshop with JXTA apprentices.

“I started [my company] as a creative outlet where I wanted to have certain things that I couldn’t afford. Growing up, when I asked my dad for new shoes, he would always say, “can you make ‘em?” *laughs* If I could come up with something that would make sense to him, he would get me something. Because of that, I’ve always had that inventive mind. I use whatever materials I can find [to create].”

JXTA SUMMER FLASHBACKS: “I started sewing in middle school. They usually have in every school this Family and Consumer Science course. Before that, my mom always knew how to sew and she was sewing her whole life, and that was her way of making a living. But she would never let me sew even though I really wanted to because I was too young. Then when I entered 7th grade, we made a little frog in class. I showed my mom and she said, “Okay we can start practicing on my sewing machine.” From there I did little projects of mine like shirts, and I would help my mom as well. In the Textile Lab, I take a ready made t-shirt, cut it up and attach a different fabric. Then I add a panel or custom designed sleeves or pockets.I still need to learn a lot. I want to learn – I want to be able to do what fashion designers can do. My dream is to design for men and women, so do a feminine design and masculine learn both sides, and mix it up and make unisex, in terms of fit and even colors and fabrics.”  Textile Lab apprentice Nasrin and her tote bag and re-constructed t-shirt design featured.
