"I'm gonna have to hide almost all of those after we get out of here." Kangmin said to Fletcher with a light chuckle as he carefully watch Khai pick up eggs and put them into his little basket. He tried to get him the smallest that he could find so that the little boy wouldn't go home with too much sugar. The last thing he wanted to start was another argument with Millie May about the toddler's sugar intake. "Hopefully some have little toys or something other than candy."

                  ‘ Last time I saw a face like yours–– ’

sawdust was a common breakfast item–– the streets were painted red with flags and propaganda. A lost duchess nearly stabbed him between the knees and moved into his care in the same breath. But aside from that– the excitement of the period–– he remembers the pint of type O in his icebox behind the caviar,  the wraith with the familiar name who needed it,  ( for you couldn’t trust blood at the time. couldn’t   trust the health of others. )

It started with a slip of paper amidst his neglected textbooks–– “FIGHT ME THO.” Which he replied with a post it on the front of his locker (which, unsurprisingly, was more often without a padlock than with)–– “WHERE. WHEN.” 

So here he is, at the WHERE. and the WHEN. (behind the bleachers, 3:45pm). It’s enough to say that he was expecting one of his brothers, or his sisters even, or that smart-but-weird guy in fourth period with the sgraggly build and the name like a fish (marlin?). 

But he was not expecting this. A girl in a plaid miniskirt and leather jacket, brandishing a baseball bat of all things.

‘ Shit, this is the girl scout meeting, isn’t it.                                                                     I’ll be on my way. ’

Through the darkness, across the room–– there’s a familiar face. God knows, those are scarce here. All these eighteen year old bodies, all his brother’s friends’, all these twelfth grade faces. But she––

She’s something familiar, something misty in his head. Though it’s the fog and stupor of alcohol muddies the perfect memory up. If he could only grasp it. Get a better look and cut through this bullshit (he is just a kid of course–– juniors can’t take their vodka, everyone knows.). 

And before he knows it he’s slurred his way over, seated himself firmly beside her on the patchy old couch and kicked his feet up on the coffee table and taken another swig. 

She’s even better up close, even more clear. 

         ‘ do you go to school at River Heights?’                                   ( he has to talk over the house music blaring, )          ‘ and, if so, do you happen to take 12 physics at third period?                                    this is a really important, totally relevant question–– i swear. ’
