in one of the post game extra modes in drv3 theres an event where Kokichi asks Izuru to join DICE, and I mean obviously Izuru says no, but god I cannot stop thinking about Izuru being in DICE. the idea is a Delight. Think about it

Random but I gotta ask since I’ve been lowkey obsessed with them lately but what do you think of Kokichi and gonta’s relationship? I honestly feel it’s super underrated and misinterpreted as abusive by most people

I have a lot of thoughts about Kokichi as a character and so before I even start to get rambly I’m putting this under a cut because I know it’ll get rambly

I don’t talk about my Kokichi thoughts Here, Much, because I know that My Interpretations Are Not Universal, but well, in this case, it’s been Asked For, and, who am I to not Talk, 

Also this has spoilers for pretty much all of V3

For starters I think a big thing about Kokichi is that most of the way he acts during the game is an act; looking closely at lines of dialogue in the first chapter, he catches on very quickly to the Hope/Despair cycle that’s going on, realizing that If You Work Together With Other People, You Are Going To Pay For It. After all, look what happened to Kaede. But he also doesn’t want to do Nothing about the situation, and so what his solution is, is that he tries to Do Good Things But While Acting Like It’s For Not Good Reasons

An example of that is the second chapter where he pushes everyone to watch the motive videos together, and while at first that action seems “bad”, Kaito himself remarks later that maybe it Would have been better if they all watched the motive videos together, because 1. it could have helped them process it better, with each other’s support, and he didn’t mention this part but I think it makes sense in a practical way, 2. if they watch everyone’s motive videos, they know who they might need to keep an eye on, just in case they might try anything 

As more time goes on, Kokichi develops the plan of pretending to be the mastermind in order to end the game, and so he acts more and more villainous to try and make it believable 

And all this doesn’t Address the question necessarily, but I’m Getting To It by elaborating my thoughts on him as a character first, 

Because during the game, it... is somewhat fair to say that Kokichi doesn’t exactly treat Gonta well, in Chapters 2 and 4 especially, 

However, I also believe that under normal circumstances, he wouldn’t have treated Gonta that way- and I believe that, amongst a lot of the flaws that V3′s writing has (which I’m too tired to go all in on right now), a lot of the time it cares more about making Kokichi an antagonist than an actual character- by that I mean, while there are parts that give Kokichi some depth and understandability, it also feels like sometimes the narrative has him do things just because, well, He’s The Bad Guy. I’m not saying “he did nothing wrong”, because that’s counterproductive and takes away some depth with him as a morally gray character, but I think people always go too hard for one or the other with saying that he’s either Bad or Good, and the other characters in the game are definitely on the side of saying he’s just Bad

Another point, in Chapter 4 I (and I’m not saying this is 100% right, it’s just how I interpret the situation) don’t think that Kokichi specifically planned on using Gonta for his idea, more that Gonta just happened to be the one that chose to follow after him. I also think it was a very deliberate choice to wait until after the execution to go back to acting as the villain, because it probably would have hurt a lot more if Gonta thought he didn’t care

So all of this is to say-

I don’t think that the relationship they have In The Killing Game is all that great, but I also believe that under normal circumstances it never would have happened, and I think it would be interesting to explore their dynamic outside of that 

One particular thing that sticks out to me about their dynamic is that Kokichi is naturally a person who has a hard time trusting people and is used to being distrusted (on the whiteboard in his room, the only person Kokichi even alludes to trusting is Shuichi, and even that has a “?” on it, and even taking into account that his trust must have been really strained by the killing game, the fact that he lies so frequently makes me think that maybe he doesn’t like being open about himself and his thoughts) (and as for Being Distrusted, he makes himself known as A Liar, and so of course that’s How People See Him),

and meanwhile Gonta is a very trusting person, and while a little socially uniformed (which makes sense given his backstory) he tries to be kind to people on instinct and help them 

I think that’s the kind of relationship that Kokichi might need; someone who will take the time to trust in him instead of leaving things at a surface level, and someone who he can be vulnerable with 

This is also a bit of a side tangent that comes from nowhere, but I feel like people tend to underestimate Gonta too. He’s not “just dumb”, it’s that he’s not used to what’s “normal” because he didn’t grow up in a “normal” environment, and nobody is willing to actually take the time and explain things to him; whenever he expresses confusion about something, everyone else just let’s it go instead of trying to explain. I think that’s another flaw in the writing of V3, and that Gonta really deserves to be treated better than that- for a game that seems to have been trying to press the idea that “you should believe in other people!”, it just seems awfully unfair that Gonta is treated as “too naive” for doing exactly that

Anyway, I’ve rambled a lot, but those are my thoughts 

If you have thoughts about their dynamic that I haven’t mentioned, I would love to hear them! I’m open to hearing differing interpretations

Birthday Memories

If Kokichi has managed to keep track of how many days have passed since the group’s time in the Ultimate Academy started, then hypothetically it should be June 21st.

Otherwise known as his birthday.

He hasn’t told anyone about this, of course. Not even necessarily because he thinks it’s something too private to talk about. 

Really, it’s because he’s never never thought much of his birthday anyway. It’s pretty much like any other day, isn’t it? If he doesn’t expect anything from it, he can’t be disappointed by it. 

There’s only one birthday he remembers that was actually good; last year.

Kokichi never told the other members of D.I.C.E. when his birthday was. One year ago, though, they clearly figured it out somehow (he still doesn’t know how they did it).

The whole day it was clear they were up to something; keeping him away from their main hangout, claiming that they had some nonsensical mission they needed to go on, right at that moment. Kokichi already had an idea of what they were planning, but he decided to play along and let them go ahead with it anyway. 

It was a surprise birthday party- although, did it really count as a surprise when he already figured it out? 

On a surface level, there wasn’t really much that was extravagant about it; most of the decorations were kind of cheep, and no one in the group had the kind of money to buy expensive gifts. 

But it was the thought that was put into it that really stuck out to him. It was obvious, to him at least, that they had spent an extensive amount of time thinking about what he would want. 

That was also when their group started wearing the checker scarves; of course he probably would have accepted it if it were just an accessory on it’s own, but something makes it feel more... sentimental when the ten of them have matching scarves. It makes him feel closer to them, even when he’s... here. 

Despite himself, Kokichi finds that he’s smiling as he thinks about his friends, reminiscing on the time they had together. 

And... and while he wouldn’t want to admit it, it does make him start to feel a little lonely. 

He misses them. He’s been trying to keep his mind off it, because he can’t afford to let his guard down around here, but he really, really misses them. They’re the only home, the only real family he’s ever known. He both wishes they were here so that he wouldn’t feel so alone, and is endlessly grateful that they’re not here. If anything bad happened to them while they were here with him, (because of him really since he’s the Ultimate one,) he... he... he doesn’t know what he would do. 

“You seem like you’ve got a lot on your mind.” 

Trying to hide his surprise, Kokichi looks up to see that Shuichi has come up to him. 

After the surprise has worn off, Kokichi gives them a bright smile. “Hi there! Nice to see you again. So, should we continue our game from where we left off?” 

The two of them spend some time talking about all kinds of stuff, with Shuichi trying to ask questions about what his organization is like, and with Kokichi relentlessly teasing them.

“Oh, by the way- here.” 

Shuichi sets a grape soda on the table.

Kokichi stares at it for a moment. “...What’s the occasion?”

I know they’re a detective and all, but- they didn’t ACTUALLY figure out that today is my birthday, did they-?

“I noticed it got left in the vending machine at the school store. And I’m pretty sure I remember seeing you drink one of these before, so I figured you like it.”

Ah, so they didn’t actually figure it out. Whew.

...

...It was pretty thoughtful of them to notice something like that, though. 

“I’ll take it!” Kokichi accepts, beaming. “Thank yooou!” 

The two of them go back to their conversation, but Kokichi thinks to himself a bit in the background. 

No one in the Ultimate Academy comes close to the friends he had before, of course; he’s known them for a long time, and there’s a level of trust that comes with that. 

But... maybe, just maybe, if he had to pick one person here that he might be able to trust... it’d probably be Shuichi.

purple, gay, antihero role, and *gets really close to the mic* morally gray characters that have a lot of depth and complexity to them, yet whenever fans talk about them, either in a good light or bad light, they reduce who they are as a character over all, some people who like them woobifying them and treating them as though they could never do anything wrong, and some people who dislike them treating them like they’re the devil incarnate, when honestly speaking they’re just troubled kids who were put into really tense situations that they weren’t prepared to deal with and so they made some decisions that weren’t the best but overall they’re not genuinely bad or evil people, and they just deserve some love and support and to get better

Im thinking about V3 chapter 3 again and im like Damn. Kokichi really did actually make an effort to help investigate this time, ended up finding a very important clue that helped them discover the killer in the trial, but got What Should Be a very serious head wound to do it (theres enough blood to even momentarily trick people into thinking hes dead, its mentioned Multiple Times that when he moves he's not stable, and he Even Says that the bloodloss is getting to him, dear lord), and YET when he is FOUND with said serious would by Shuichi and Maki they just. Do not give a fuck. It's like GEEZ GUYS, WOULD IT KILL YOU TO CARE A LITTLE? Kokichi is bleeding out of the head and Maki is saying "if you're gonna pass out at least tell us everything that happened first" What The Fuck, Maki
