Kazumi is too stubborn to act wisely and suffers from heat exhaustion

Kiku makes shade, and Suto runs off to find water

Kabuto finds Suto and helps him

Kazumi is saved, but they have to forfeit

Back to the village

Kazumi is angry

She has an episode and wanders the graveyard

Kabuto finds her and escorts her home

Things are tense between the team

Kabuto keeps coming around to check on Kazumi, she accuses him of stalking her, he denies it and backs off to rethink a new strategy

He comes across her in the training field alone, and suggests they spar

Kazumi doesn't take it seriously and keeps insulting Kabuto's fake shitty techniques

He gets fed up with her superiority and accidentally cuts her side open, forcing him to heal her

Kazumi asks for lessons, Kabuto now has an excuse to be around her

Open in on their first lesson

At some point, do the reveal that they met once years before

Kabuto lies that he's still working for Konoha under Root

Mirror Incident v2 WIP

The one mentioned in my pinned post. Still figuring it out. I just really like the intro. Takes place when Kabuto is 17 and Kazumi is 15. About a month or two after they meet. I'm still ironing out the specific timeline of events.

For context, he's been giving her lessons on the Mystical Palm technique after he was forced to reveal his proficiency. Context for THAT will be provided, should I decide to post my notes about the outright fic also mentioned in my pinned post.

The warm August air blanketed Kabuto. Even the sanctuary of shade offered by Kazumi’s front door didn’t deter it. Kabuto sighed as he knocked again. She told him to come today at this time for her lesson. He let a few moments pass before knocking yet again.

Still no answer.

He took out his pocketwatch and checked the time. She did say today, right? He knocked a fourth time.

Is she not home? If not, where would she be? She can’t be visiting someone; she doesn’t like being around other people. And it’s not like her to run out when she’s expecting him. If she’s expecting him.

Kabuto sighed. He hoped she didn’t wander off to the cemetery again. He already came all the way out to her house; he didn’t want to go back through the village all the way to the graves to bring her back. Not in this heat.

Then, an idea came to him. He remembered that little stone toad knickknack she kept by her door. Didn’t she say she turns it to face the wall when she leaves the house? He can just look at that to see if she’s home.

Only, he’d have to be in her house to check.

Kabuto shrugged with a smile on his face. Oh well, what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her. He took out his lockpick and was ready to open the door by force when the knob turned and opened ajar. He stood blankly for a moment. She should have locked it if she went out.

Kabuto groaned as he tilted his head back. He really, really hoped she wasn’t wandering around the cemetery again.

Nevertheless, he took a step inside, and a quick look at that little toad figurine answered his question. She’s home.

She’s home?

She can’t have forgotten to turn it the other way. Why didn’t she answer the door? Did something happen to her?

He stepped inside briskly to find any evidence of a break-in. His eyes scanned the room for anything out of the ordinary, and he spotted a glass bottle on the floor. He hurried to it, and there lay Kazumi, her kyofugan flashing an intent look at her reflection in the fallen full-length mirror.

"Kazumi?"

"Hm?"

"Are you happy?"

She turned to face her lover. "Where did that come from?"

"I don't know," he avoided her gaze.

"Well, it's a stupid question," she looked unimpressed. "Of course I'm happy."

Kabuto didn't press the matter, though he wasn't satisfied with her answer. He intended to keep to himself, but Kazumi knelt behind him and draped her arms over his shoulders.

"Are you unhappy?" Her voice was quiet in his ear.

Looking over his shoulder, Kabuto answered her. "What makes you think that?"

Her breath tickled the back of his neck as she sighed. "That wasn't the first time you asked me that. I want to know if you're looking for an out."

"An out?"

"If you're unhappy and looking to see if I am as well, you could leave."

"That's ridiculous. If I wasn't happy, then I wouldn't spend so much time here," Kabuto looked forward.

Kazumi lightly pressed her lips to his neck.

"Then it's settled," she wrapped her arms around his torso as she whispered. "I'll always want you."

"That's a bold claim."

"And it's true. You have my heart in the palm of your hands."

Kabuto started to speak, but Kazumi reached around and put a finger to his lips.

"Let me guess? You were going to make a snide comment to make me wax poetic about my feelings. Kabuto, darling, as much as I love stroking your ego, I do need to finish dinner."

She got off his back while he huffed.
