Kaede was woken up by a gentle nudging on her shoulder, and a soft voice.
"Kaede... Kaede... Kaede, wake up..."
She groaned, turning her head into the pillow and hoping she would be left alone.
The gentle nudging on her shoulder turned into an insistent pulling on her sleeve. "Kaede, get up!"
"I'm tired," she muttered, groggily pushing the hand away.
It was silent for a moment, and she thought she had won, until her blanket was torn away and sent flying off the bed, revealing the blonde girl in her pajamas, with a second pillow in her arms.
Her eyes finally opened, looking up angrily at the culprit. There stood Sadone, a nervous smile on her face. Kaede's facial expression softened, though she still looked slightly annoyed.
"What is it? It's a weekend, you know."
"Y- Yeah, I know, but..." Sadone, trailed off, shuffling her feet. "I was wondering if you want to make Christmas cookies with me."
The blonde stared at her, studying the girl's face for a moment. "I am tired, but... alright, give me a moment to get ready."
"A- Actually..." Sadone had her hands behind her back, her usual nervous expression still on her face. "I was thinking we could do it in our pajamas... I asked your dad, and he said there aren't any guests coming over today..."
"Then I suppose staying in our pajamas wouldn't be a problem," Kaede muttered, pulling herself into a sitting position.
She stood up, stretching her arms over her head and yawning, before following Sadone out of the room. Walking down the halls behind the slightly younger girl gave her a sense of nostalgia, remembering when she had first started staying with them, and kept getting lost within the intricate hallways. That had been several years ago; now they were second and first years in high school rather than middle school.
They arrived in the kitchen, looking through the cupboards for all of the ingredients. Kaede wasn't really great at cooking, so she just grabbed the simple stuff that she knew they needed, such as flour. Sadone got out everything else.
"I'm surprised you know where everything is, I'm not even sure where some of this stuff goes," Kaede mused, looking over all the ingredients on the counter.
"Sometimes, when I'm bored, the chefs teach me how to cook," Sadone explained. "You should try it too, some time."
"Hmm," Kaede hummed absentmindedly, watching Sadone pour different ingredients into a large bowl, before mixing them up. "I don't think cooking is really my thing, though."
"I think it's fun," the other girl stated, dipping her finger in the batter to give it a taste test. "Mm, it's really good, you should try."
Kaede reluctantly dipped her finger in the batter, raising it to her lips to taste it. "Ah, you're right! It's really good."
Sadone smiled at her, continuing to stir the batter a bit more. Once it had become the right consistency to use as cookie dough, they started putting them on the baking sheet, making them into different shapes.
"A heart-shaped cookie? What does that have to do with Christmas?"
She shrugged, before turning to look at the cookie dough in Kaede's hand. "Hey, you're making one too."
She looked down at her hands. "I- It was just subconciously!"
Sadone giggled while Kaede looked away.
While they were in the oven, the two girls leaned against the counter.
"So... did you sleep well?" The older girl asked, prompting to start some kind of conversation.
"Mhm. Did you?"
"I suppose so."
An awkward silence fell upon them.
"Do you think the cookies will turn out okay?" Kaede eyed the oven.
"I think so... I've made them a few times before, but..." Sadone trailed off with the tiniest of shrugs.
"W- Well, I'm sure they'll turn out great, since you're such a good cook," She assured the green-haired girl.
Sadone tore her eyes away from the floor to look her in the eyes. "You think so?"
"Well, yeah, I had those brownies on Valentine's Day, and that cake you made on Hinata's birthday, and you've made lunch a lot, and they all tasted great."
A tiny smile made its way onto Sadone's face as she looked back at the floor, her face red.
When the cookies were finally done, Sadone put on the oven mitts and pulled them out of the oven, putting them on top of the stove.
"See? I told you they would turn out great," Kaede said as she folded her arms.
"Y- Yeah, you helped, though, so I shouldn't get all of the credit," Sadone muttered. She almost looked nervous about something.
"Well, you did do most of the work..." Kaede trailed off, studying Sadone's face. "Is something bothering you?"
She took the oven mitts off quickly and put them on the counter, scrunching her face up slightly in an attempt to appear indifferent. "No, it's nothing."
The blonde narrowed her eyes. "Sadone, I can tell something's wrong. Just tell me what it is, you can talk to me."
She looked up to meet Kaede's eyes without saying anything for a moment. "I..."
She went silent again, her eyes flicking between Kaede and the cookies.
"I- I wanted to try feeding them to you, b- but, you'd probably be annoyed, huh..."
Kaede blinked. "Wh- Huh?"
The younger girl turned her head away while she fiddled her thumbs. "I- It's fine, I wasn't actually going to do it anyways..."
Kaede snapped out of her flustered state. "W... Well, it's not that you can't. It just caught me off guard, you know..."
Sadone looked back at her hopefully. "Are you sure?"
"Y- Yeah."
With an embarrassed smile she grabbed a heart-shaped cookie from the sheet, glad that it had cooled down enough to touch. She held it out to Kaede while keeping one hand under to catch any falling crumbs.
She took a hesitant bite, closing her eyes so that she didn't have to make eye contact with Sadone.
Once she had finished it, she opened her eyes to look at the younger girl, finding a soft smile on her face.
"Here, now you can feed me one, too."
Kaede gulped as she took the second treat from Sadone's hand, offering it to her slowly. As she took a bite, the older girl felt her face growing red from embarrassment.
However, as the morning went on and they continued feeding each other the cookies they had made, Kaede didn't mind it after all.
