chapter 15: DAY&NIGHT/Residual Thought at Company F
The scene at DAY&NIGHT has no real problems that I noticed! The one thing that gets lost is that Kagami is talking in a very "shop owner" like manner as he pretends to serve an imaginary customer in a restaurant. It does sound like he's putting on a character, which is why Nami asks who he's imitating.
Also, Kagami's "You're pretty cool for a kid" doesn't mean cool as in awesome, but as in cool-headed, taking things in stride.
Yup, come on in.
How many people?
Hm? You by yourself?
No way, really?
By yourself? You having
dinner alone?
Sounds pretty lonely!
OK, in that case, it’s
on me today.
[KYOUSUKE:] Yes, yes, welcome. How many people today?
Huh? Don't tell me... just one?
No way! Unbelievable...
A singleton? You're dining alone?
You're more lonely than you look, [sir or madam]!
Well, in that case, it's free of charge today.
=======
This is the second to last Thought in the files containing the names and descriptions. The very last one is Meiling's "Love Letter" from chapter 21. So it seems like this might have been added pretty late into development. It also comes right after a bunch of Thoughts related to the Mint storyline, so I believe there were some revisions done to that part of the game. The game files also have a single file containing traces of a sprite for Mint, so I'm pretty confident that this last section of the Thought files is where you find the last-minute changes and additions.
(Another Thought that looks out of place down here is the one from Yuuji's Silent infection in chapters 14 and 15, which is in the middle of all the ones about Mint from chapter 18.)
[I was going to do the rest of the thread about Kagami’s investigation, but the new posts are pretty easy to understand in the EN release, so here’s another thread that’s also tangentially about Kagami]
[Haine:] [[How about WE do the scolding for once]]
I’m speaking out against the infamous convenience store manager of Kisaragi City! Don’t whine about your customers’ clothes! You’re a business, so be a little friendly! Don’t wipe down someone’s path after they walk through like they’re disgusting! Don’t kick your customers out to clean up!
[note: I’m still not completely sure about the title on this one, so I’ve been putting off posting this... but I might as well. I’ll come back to fix it if I figure out I was super wrong]
He punched me and kicked me out! What kind of convenience store is this?! What’s the deal with this freakishly strong gorilla?! He’s so loud my goddamn ears are ringing!
[notes:
管理人 is an administrator (both for companies or for a forum), but 理人 is just a name. This doesn’t seem to be someone with admin privileges on the BBS. (理人 can be read a *lot* of different ways as a name, so I just picked one)
Similarly, S市 would be S Town, but 市民 means a citizen/the public/etc.
S is sometimes used as a joking shorthand for “Sadist” so “Sadist Citizen” is a possible interpretation of S市民? I don’t see a contextual reason to think it is, though.]
[He] does have a better lineup of products than you’d think, so it’d be a nice store if not for... you know. I don’t think [he] used to be this bad, though.
[note: 悠 is another character that can be read any number of ways as a name, so I’ll just stick with the EN release’s choice.]
[NOTE: I translated the BBS thread about Conductance quite a while ago, and said that the username Mars is probably Tanaka--I'd forgotten that Kyousuke is supposed to be a red herring at this stage. Even though he shows up later on the BBS with a different username, Mars is probably him, acting so suspiciously that I took him for the culprit even knowing the correct answer!]
[note: Here, asking Kagami about *either* Stabber or Last Year’s Incident will cause him to leave, so you can only ask him about one Info item... Boy, this is a fun gimmick that I’d completely forgotten about.
Kagami has no obvious dialogue responding to Strange Voice or Poplar Fluff, but there are three lines at the end that may be related to those.]
You can’t just suspect anyone who’s wearing a hood.
[note: As with Yamato’s Thought associating guns with art, the EN version obscures the exact thing that’s supposed to draw your suspicion and create an actual mystery in the early game.]
---
I’m the criminal?! Wow,
your jokes sting!
Well, later!
Kosuke hurriedly runs
off, seeming very nervous
[KAGAMI:] Me, the culprit...? Ha ha, that’s one mean joke.
Bye!
/Kyousuke ran off in a great commotion./
---
---
[Mysterious anger lines that seem impossible to trigger; I tried bugging him with TALK about 10 times before giving up. Maybe a response to Poplar Fluff or Strange Voice??]
So you’re not gonna’
cooperate with me?
Alright, Alright. Fine.
Well, I’ve no use for you.
I’m outta’ here.
[KAGAMI:] Hm? You’re not gonna tell me anything?
Fine, fine, I get it.
I’ve got no use for you, then. Get outta here!
[note: 行った行った is in the past tense, so it looks like he’s saying something like, “I’m already gone!” It’s actually a command, though.]
Owner of the K Detective Agency. It’s called a detective agency, but it’s just him doing everything. He doesn’t have any money, but he’s borrowing an office off of Inagaki Shun’ichi’s goodwill. Surprisingly un-calm.
A strange man with a frivolous way of addressing you, constantly changing the way he speaks. He cuts a strange figure enveloped in that hood, but apparently that’s his personal code. He seems to like music, and he’s always listening to it. I suspect he exaggerates his reactions.
He also seems to like movies, and he’s close with Sakai Yumiko from South End. They can sometimes be seen standing around and talking, having a good time. Among obscure films, his favorites are the ones about ghosts.
The owner [of Deep Sea], Inagaki Shunichi, is nice, but apparently he doesn’t exactly like Kagami’s hobbies. Now and then he gets creeped out, and a scream echoes in front of Deep Sea. What on earth is [Kagami] up to?
He likes Triple Burgers, and his office garbage can is stuffed full of burger wrappers. How does he eat like that and stay so thin? What’s going on inside his body?
With the discovery of his corpse, another important person has vanished from Kisaragi City. What worries me is what he was investigating at the very end. We’ve really lost someone special.
[note: Inagaki is now using “female” speech patterns throughout this scene, and seems to have embraced his true self... or something. He sounds super flaming, in other words. Thank you, 2008.]
[Aya:] All that’s left to do now is wrap up a few loose ends.
Naruse Shinji has completely recovered. He’s waiting in the chief’s office.
[note: That さあてと (”now, then”) implies that the “remaining work” (残作業) is something they’re about to get started on right now--not paperwork, but interviewing Shinji.]
I hope he’ll remember
about the Phalanx.
I told him you’re my
former partner. It’s ok.
[Aya:] Hopefully he’ll remember something about PHALANX.
I'll tell him you’re an old friend from my investigator days, so don’t worry.
But I’m impressed by
his willpower.
Everyone is amazed he
was able to recover.
[Aya:] That boy really does have a powerful [sense of] self. I’m impressed.
Everyone at Picus is astonished that he was able to recover from the state he was in.
[Yui:] A corpse was discovered in the cemetery in District 1. He was taken to the hospital...
...but he’d had no vital signs for more than three hours, so they couldn’t revive him.
This is the guy.
[Yui:] This is the man they found.
Now we’re questioning
witnesses.
Ok, keep it up.
Yes sir.
[Yui:] We’re in the process of questioning the witness[es].
[Aya:] I see. Keep investigating.
[Yui:] Yes, ma’am!
[note: Yeah, once again... this is the problem when you’re working with the script and nothing else. Yui’s line is just a polite way of saying “Understood!” to a superior, but the TL assumed she was talking to a man and added a little flourish that... well, it had a 50% chance of working in English. The Peaks mistranslation shows up later in this file, so this is someone who both didn’t get the memo on English acronyms, and didn’t work on enough of the game to realize that Aya is in charge at the police station by now.]
