Even if there had been a grain of truth of them in the end. Was it so awful to want to see the younger engineer smile when it was a fairly rare occurance? Slight possible infatuation aside, making people happy was what Silas loved to do. So when he led Alex back to the common room from a late night in the lab to reveal a constellation projecter, he thought he was prepared for the other's reaction.
He wasn't. The genuine gratitude in Alex's ' thank you', and just the way his eyes upturned warmly in a sincere smile felt like someone had knocked the air out of his lungs. Warmth spread throught out his chest and squeezed and all he could do is look slightly dumbfounded as he watched Alex, still smiling, staring at the projected stars on the ceiling and listing off the ones he knew.
This was bad. Very, very bad. It had all been so manageable up to this point, thoughts were easily dismissed or pushed aside, but now his brain had decided to short circuit instead looping a few key thoughts: He really really wanted to hold him a lot (with maybe- ok, ok- definitely a little kissing.) Alex's expression when he was pleased was probably not the best thing for his heart. And he still wanted to make him smile all the damn time anyway. The concept of a combination of all three felt almost overwhelming.
Later, alone the medic just stared at the wall swirling thoughts tormenting him too much to sleep. How had he fallen so fast? He could feel the knowing stares of 'i told you so' from Mate already. He was doomed. He couldn't possibly try acting on it right? True he'd already acted perhaps a bit too cozy before, but now.. now that he couldn't just hide behind denial anymore... There'd be trouble, protocol... and Alex.. it wasn't as if he could just expect the other to be in the same boat. They were partners but... that didn't mean he could just walk over and wrap his arms around him, burying his face in his soft white hair and breathe in contently and smile when he felt the embrace returned and...
He groaned and hid behind his arms as his head dropped to the table.This wasn't helping. It just made his heart clench harder as he came to realization that he was doomed; damned if he did and damned if he didn't.
Maybe if he just hid in his bunk and buried himself under blankets for a day or two it'd blow over. He knew it wouldn't. He tried anyway
