Why is there never fanfic for my obscure favorite Arthurian guys why must I write it myself this is unfair
I need to scream into the void about challenges with larp character writing. Specifically: Kahedin. How do I make him interesting. How do I give him enough complexity and depth so someone can play him for a weekend.
I seriously considered swapping him for another character but then Isolde of the White Hands really has insufficient character connections. I’m already having to make some up out of whole cloth just to weave them sufficiently into the cast (decided Guinevere and False Guin can be childhood friends with Isolde Blanchemains and Kahedin, Camelliard building ties with Brittany or something). So I’m stuck with “make Kahedin interesting”.
So I pored through the Kahedin tag on ye old tumblr to see if anyone else has any insight to his character. And I’ve already read everything I can find on him in Prose Tristan, La Tavola Ritonda, and Tristano Panciatichiano. I should probably check Morte as well. And from all of that, here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
Themes of loneliness? Sister was very sheltered to the point of naïveté, and he was raised as heir to the throne of Brittany. Can’t imagine their parents were particularly great given Blanchemains’ whole situation. Kahedin desperate for friendship, esp. male friendship/approval? All his friends in childhood/adolescence were girls, maybe he never had male friendships and is hungry for them, that’s why he latches on to Tristan so hard?
Also he was “very much in Mark’s favor” and could see Isolde (and thus Brangaine) whenever he wanted. Attaches to Mark as father figure maybe? Which would have added tension/strife to his other relationships.
Deep devotion to people who don’t / can’t return it. That’s gotta speak to some attachment issues. Why do you only latch onto unavailable people? Safer that way. (Thiiiis might be the core of the character, yay finally x_x) see themes of loneliness paragraph for thoughts about childhood/parents.
“Disdainful of a country where the only greeting knights seemed to know was to strike and maim and kill each other” (specifically Logres) from I think prose Tristan. That’s a fun element. Probably he can relate to Dinadan on that disdain.
Hopeless bisexual who doesn’t have social context for bisexuality and keeps mixing up romantic attraction/love and platonic attraction/love. also always falls in love with his friends, in part because of his inability to tell his attraction experiences apart.
"You have destroyed the only one forgiving enough to love you."
