Costume Analysis Part II: Kahekili This is my second set of illustrations breaking down some of the costume designs in Chief of War. For these drawings, I wanted to look into the construction of the 'ali'i's (Hawaiian nobility) 'ahu 'ula (full-length feather cloak) and the specific kākau (traditional hand-tapped tattoos) patterns depicted on Kahekili in the show. My previous illustrations of the costumes were done on some of Ka'ahumanu's gorgeous pāʻū (traditional Hawaiian skirts/gowns). Okay okay I know there's like 10 kanaka maoli on here and probably 7 of us have watched chief of war and probably 5 will see this post and probably only 2 know the answer to this question, so to the one who will respond.

Female warriors? I know that king Kamehameha had some female generals and female ali'i would learn Lua, but kahekili had what looked like normal women not just ali'i?

I'm so down for this to be historically accurate but my confusion about whether or not it is comes from the fact that they really aren't showing the kapu system like, at all. It's not super easy to tell at a glance who has higher status than others (aka no one is crawling on the ground like ever. Ka'ina would definitely have needed to when seeing kahekili for the first time at least.

And the (simplified) kapu system was all like oh wahine can't do things that are Kū and kāne can't do things that are Hina. And like, war and Lua are the most Kū things I can think of? Can anyone let me know how women were able to do things that were so Kū when they couldn't eat bananas? Is the slingshot a weapon of Hina that I don't know about? The internet is a bit bereft of accurate information so obviously I'm gonna turn to y'all and hope someone knows

There is this scene in Chief of War where Kahekili is chasing down a kid to kill him. It's meant to be horrific but I am so irony poisoned by the internet that I thought, "If you took a screen cap of this scene it could make a funny meme." I hate that my head goes to that sometimes.
