Absolutely brilliant what martha wells did in Witch King with kai and bashasa. Straight from the jump we know bashasa is dead and has been for at least around 20 years. We also know that by that point Kai was close enough with him emotionally to be the one who hears his last words.

Then we get the flashbacks. And they aren't just a one-and-done thing, setting up exposition. They're practically their own novel, a fully-fleshed out story of the war and how all these characters from the modern storyline came to mean so much to each other. And Bashasa is there, he's alive, and he's brilliant and shining and it's impossible not to see how much kai admires him from how he recounts the story. And they're falling in love (though they may not realize it until Queen Demon) and you the reader are falling in love with bashasa right alongside Kai, all the while knowing he's dead. He was a mortal and now he's dead.

And you, just like Kai, know it can't last forever but you still cant help it. It's a textbook tragedy.

Anyways this rant was inspired by wren's Witch King playlist. Putting The Moon Will Sing and All Things End back to back was truly diabolical.

I love that in Witch King the momentous rebellion that broke a magical empire and changed the world has the energy of a group project that happens the night before it’s due

An aspect of Queen Demon I’m really loving is that this is Kai’s family, full stop. The first reference to it seems like a joke or deception — here we are, this ragtag crew, my family, can we park here? — but as time goes on it becomes clear that Ziede is his longest-lived relationship and her every microexpression and sigh is a paragraph to Kai and he trusts her to get him out of a bad situation more than anyone on earth, that even before they could psychically communicate he was like, wouldn’t it be great if we could actually just read each others minds? And her wife of course is part of his family because that’s his sister’s wife, and she’s honest to a fault and dependable and honorable and strong even when she’s oblivious and too stoic. And naturally her brother is part of his family even if he’s a little annoying sometimes, he’s smart and funny and incisive, and if they picked up a random witch and orphan along the way, well, what were they going to do, abandon them?? That orphan knows how to shoplift and none of them have cultivated that skill in like 30 years!
