Day 7 for @narutokinktober, Somnophilia
KakaShika
Summary:
A long day at Hokage Tower is exhausting for both Kakashi and Shikamaru, but Kakashi finds a way to unwind from the day that requires no energy on Shikamaru’s part
So after reading Knock Knock, Let the Devil in again (I can’t praise you enough with how good that story is ♥️) and I’m so invested in the the dynamic between Shikamaru, Sakura, and Kakashi!
And because I have a question (and I hope I’m not bothering you by asking this 😭) how do you think Kakashi and Shikamaru would react if Sakura either came back from a mission seriously injured or if they found her seriously injured from a mission?
Hiii, thank you so much for this ask, I’m always so ready to gush about these three!
When I read this ask, inspiration quite literally slammed into me and I churned this out in a sprint session. Oops.
Word Count: 2,126 words
I present to you a one-shot in the knock knock-verse.
It was too early in the day to function, yet Shikamaru was in the Hokage’s office bustling about, feeling only half-human as he guzzled on his third coffee. “Fuckin’ paperwork,” he muttered disdainfully at the sight of an ungodly pile marked with his name.
That had to violate some natural law. How this became Shikamaru’s routine was beyond him.
Once upon a time, he professed that his deepest wish was to lead a mediocre life. And here he was.
Tsunade showed up ten minutes late, visibly drunk and doing very little to conceal it. “Morning,” she tossed over her shoulder and made a beeline for the coffee machine.
“Hokage-sama,” Shikamaru said, studying the dark circles under her eyes and her ashen pallor. “You look …”
He clamped his mouth shut. Was it worth getting assigned a D-rank to let her know she looked like shit? Probably not.
“Save it kid, I know,” she waved a casual hand and slumped in her chair. “Couldn’t care less with the night I pulled.”
“Drinking again, Hokage-sama?” he inquired with polite interest.
“Ha,” she said. “I wish.”
When he raised an eyebrow, she elaborated, slumping even further in her chair. “Sakura,” she pinched the bridge of her nose. “They brought her back yesterday.”
Shikamaru’s heart sank. “Brought her back?”
“Yes, there was an ambush and she was badly injured—cracked every one of her ribs, that idiot. And the hospital was out of B-positive blood so Shizune had to sit the healing session out to donate blood. Nearly ran myself dry trying to keep her breathing…” Tsunade was scrubbing at her face but Shikamaru wasn’t listening anymore—he could barely hear her over the deafening roar of his heartbeat.
“Is she alive?” he demanded once he found his voice. “Is she going to be okay?”
“Yes, but she’s going to need plenty of rest—” the rest of her sentence remained a mystery for Shikamaru tore out of the room with a single-minded focus.
In the space between heartbeats, rationality was tossed out of the window. It left behind a desperate and half-crazed person—he needed to see her, to hear her heartbeat, to see the lively green of her eyes and he wasn’t going to rest until it happened.
He burst through the hospital doors undoubtedly looking like he’d escaped an asylum. The nurse he cornered shot him a bewildered look. “Sir, are you—” she began to say when he cut her off.
“Haruno Sakura,” he demanded breathlessly. “Her room. Where can I find her?”
And third: KakaShika "Would you rather play some shogi?"

Shikamaru paused in his steps for what felt like the firsttime all day and looked around, sweeping his eyes over the room one last timeto make sure that everything was absolutely perfect. He’d spent hours cleaning, another hour rearranging the furniture to his own liking, and yet anothercouple of hours fiddling with the temporary additions set up just for tonight.Despite how many times he had moved it back and forth he still wasn’t sure heliked the couch where it was, pushed up against the far wall instead ofunderneath the window like usual, but it was too late to change it now. Kakashi’schakra was already halfway down the street.
A wry smile touched his lips as he took in the full effectof his efforts. The place hardly looked the same but that was sort of the idea.He wished he could say that all of this had been for some special occasion butin truth it had become more of an inside joke than anything else. Kakashi hadaccused him months ago of going to too much effort when it was his turn to setup date night, a ridiculous statement considering how lazy Shikamaru preferred tobe. But in teasing retaliation his partner had set up an even more elaboratedate and Shikamaru’s pride couldn’t just let that be. From there things hadkind of snowballed.
Now here he stood with both hands on his hips as Kakashi openedthe door and smirked to see the man freeze between one step and the next, facedropping in to some combination of equal parts horrified and impressed.
“I might have to call mercy,” Kakashi said, looking up atthe ribbons festooned through the beams of the ceiling. “You might have just wonwith this one.”
“What, too much?” Shikamaru asked with a cheeky grin. Thehands on his hips slid down in to his pockets to give him a casual air as heeyed the massive display of candles all set up around the floor to form a giantheart shape, each of them different shades of red and pink.
“Just the candles would have been a lot. The ribbons made ittoo much. But replacing all the light bulbs with colored ones, that’sdefinitely going way too far. Please tell me you don’t have any other surpriseshidden around here.” Kakashi was smiling despite the wariness in his tone, slipping the Hokage’s robe off his shoulders to hang it up in their front hallcloset before picking his way over the display of candles.
Shikamaru waited until his partner had greeted him with agentle kiss before admitting, “Well, I might have a few more things hidden upmy sleeve.”
“Maa, at least tell me one of them involves food.”
“I’m surprised you couldn’t tell that for yourself. Did youscent seal your mask again?”
He watched Kakashi pull down the mask, amused to see therewas indeed a seal on the inside, and resolved to have a private conversationwith man’s secretary about wearing so much perfume when her boss had such asensitive nose.
“Mm, I smell salmon.” Kakashi’s words were punctuated with alow rumble from his stomach.
“Yup. And you have your choice of dinner entertainment.”Shikamaru nearly broke down laughing at the sharp look that swung his way. “Wecan either play that couples board game Ino gave us last Christmas or Lee washinting earlier that he would be willing to come by and serenade us for ‘addedatmosphere’. I would just need to send him a clone.”
“Uh…wow…those are some, er, interesting choices.” Justwatching his partner struggle with trying to form his sentences so they cameout politely was painful. Shikamaru took pity on him much quicker than he’dplanned to, already satisfied that he had finally won their silly littlecompetition.
Reaching up to wrap both arms around that long pale neck, heasked, “Would you rather just play some shogi? We can kick his whole mess outof the way and eat on the floor while we play?”
He nearly laughed out loud when Kakashi sagged with relief.
“Thank kami. You’re an absolute menace. Remind me to neverchallenge you in this sort of thing again; I really thought you’d be too lazyto put in this kind of effort!”
Shikamaru hummed noncommittally and snapped a few shadowstitches out the snuff the candles without answering, not wanting to embarrasseither of them with his mushy thoughts. But the truth was that when it came to Kakashi, the light of his heart, there was nothing in the world he would ever considertoo much effort.

Self indulgent poly? *nod* Self indulgent poly!

His feet hit the floor as he sighs softly. The chair creaks as he stands, joints popping and shirt rising up with a stretch he knows would earn him a heated stare from Iruka. Iruka’s always appreciated the little things, something for which Shikamaru is eternally grateful. Maybe he can convince him to climb on the roof and watch the stars tonight.
“It is,” he says, locking up behind himself, “my night, after all.”
“Is it?”
Shikamaru starts at Kakashi’s voice coming around the corner. “I distinctly remember Genma saying he’s going to make you do everything for me tonight,” he says. His lips lift in a grin as Kakashi blankets him from behind and puts his hand back on the door. “What?”
“We’re hanging out in your office tonight, I’m tired of looking at the normal view.” Kakashi tips Shikamaru’s chin slightly back to brush masked lips across naked ones. “And I got done five minutes before our usual time, so I decided to surprise you.”
“For purely business reasons, I’m sure,” Shikamaru says.
Kakashi nuzzles into his neck as he walks them forward, a low chuckle rumbling through his chest. “Why else would I walk all the way down the hall?”
Shikamaru spins in his arms just before the small of his back makes contact with the desk. His eyes search Kakashi’s for the tell-tale go ahead before he brings his hands up to tug the mask down around Kakashi’s throat. “Because--” he kisses Kakashi quickly-- “either you love me--” again-- “or you’re hiding paperwork--” and again, before Kakashi shakes his head-- “that you don’t want to stay late and do.”
“Maybe I missed you?”
It’s the hopeful lilt in Kakashi’s voice that tips Shikamaru off, and he decides that tonight’s not worth ruining over work he can help run through tomorrow. “Mm, I think it’s because you love me.”
If it was the hope before, it’s Kakashi’s relieved sigh that solidifies the theory. He rests both arms over Shikamaru’s shoulders, the tiniest bit of tongue peeking out in concentration as he works the tie out of his hair. When he gets it, Shikamaru groans softly as the strands flow around his shoulders and the pads of Kakashi’s fingers massage his scalp. “I think you should wear your hair down around here more often,” Kakashi muses. “It’s beautiful.”
“You wouldn’t get anything done,” Shikamaru teases, leaning into the touch.
“Yeah, but every day would be a good one.”

Day 29: Wabi Sabi
Pairing: KakaShika
Wabi Sabi is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete". It is a concept derived from the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence (三法印 sanbōin), specifically impermanence (無常 mujō), suffering (苦 ku) and emptiness or absence of self-nature (空 kū).Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes.
