Dextera the Righteous, Lord Kakophonist by Anatoly Bezver
Without the song, he might have been condemned to a lesser existence – one more faceless warrior, among a Legion of such. One more forgotten death-yet-to-be. The swelling frustration of that impossible moment lent strength to his voice, and he thrust his gauntlets forward, the sonic emitters built into his palms blaring their discordant rhapsody. ‘I will not be chained. I will not be caged. I will not be a slave.’ His words hammered the air, urging his choir to greater efforts. ‘We will not fade away. We will sing. We will always have sung. We will be singing when the final curtain falls. Sing, my brothers. Sing!’
This is the kind of sentiment I wish I saw more often in Chaos
"Bull" Ramos for Marine Meat Monday
I know, I already drew him for MMM - but there's no limit how often I'll draw Emperor's Children!
The hulking Noise Marine laughed – a growling, guttural sound that made the connector nodes of Merix’s prosthetics tighten painfully. ‘Eidolon. I thought we had drawn near Harmony. The ghost-sounds of its death danced among the branches of our grove, for some time.’ Ramos studied Alkenex with a single, bloodshot eye. ‘And what do you want, Equerry to the Lord Commander Primus?’ ‘Merely to speak with you, Bull of the Eighth. They sing your praises, among the choirs of the Kakophoni. You cracked the Lunar Gate with a single scream, and speared the heart of the Titan, Albia’s Hand, with your song.’ He looked around. ‘The Chief Apothecary does not treat you with the respect you deserve, brother.’

Noise Marine-chan has found a demonic guitar
I haven't drawn him in quite a while. I'm not much in the mood for my OCs at the moment.
But there's always time for a little musical warfare.
90s-Tekkno-Noise Marine-chan is taking his calling very seriously.
It's the first time I've drawn him without his armour.
Else, he was like this.
Or this.
Or this.
Or this.
But you don't wear your armour for a rave! So squeaky shorts and neon it is!
Just Chillin with the boys
Conceptualising the Kakophoni
What kind of music might a typical Noise Marine find interesting?
Please note: I am not a music student and only a very amateur composer. As such my understanding of the language of music is very limited. As such, I struggle to describe concepts that would be easy for a Jazz student. I also apologise in advance for any lapses in my understanding of music theory and welcome anyone with a better understanding (particularly someone who understands synthesising sounds, wave forms and frequencies) to collaborate on helping me to articulate these ideas and hopefully add some of your own insights.
Noise Marines have variously been conceptualised as Glam Rockers and, more recently, as Dub Step Junkies. Basically whatever is deemed the most edgy and grating music at the time. While these ideas are fun, I personally imagine that your typical Noise Marine would find both of these genres rather bland. That is not to suggest that they are necessarily bland genres in themselves, but we are talking about beings with enhanced senses, who have seen and heard it all before. No music that can be conceptualised by human minds is likely to compel one of the Emperor’s Children. I recall in the novel Fulgrim a scene when Fulgrim was listening to many types of music at the same time. By modern standards that would sound like a chaotic cacophony with diverse sounds possibly ranging from the classical compositions of Tchaikovski to the polyrhythmic djent of Meshuggah to the Drone of Sunn O))) to the avant grade electronica of Aphex Twin to Ravi Shankar to Tibetan throat singing (and much more), all played together. But Fulgrim would have had access to the music, not only of many human cultures spread out across the galaxy, but also of other intelligent beings, including daemons. Add to that that Noise Marines have been blasting their jams on the battle fields of the galaxy for ten thousand years, and have thus likely refined their tastes and discovered countless sounds that even Fulgrim likely could never have imagined during the Horus Heresy. Never the less, I am determined to begin to conceptualise the inconceivable. Important to this task is the idea of enhanced senses, giving Noise Marines not only access to a much wider range of sound frequencies but also infinitely more subtlety and variation between notes, as well as the possibility to distinguish specific sounds (perhaps many at a time) in the midst of a chaotic frenzy of sounds. In Western music there are set distances between notes, but one could conceive of music were the notes are 1945.86th the length we are used to, or where each note has completely different and randomly determined lengths depending on some mathematical formula developed by an advanced civilisation or warp entity. Chords could include thousands of notes ranging from far above to far below human hearing. The ways we (modern humans) compose songs would likely bore a Noise Marine. Even some of the most progressive and avant garde music would be too straight forward to them. Likely there would be little repetition and the likelihood of random chord played by a Noise Marine having ever been heard before in the history of the galaxy would be as unlikely as catching two identical snow flakes in your palm. Likely they have discovered new chords that can tear apart atoms. Perhaps they have discovered chords that induce utter despair and others that can create orgasmic sensations inconceivable even to the most advanced Tantrikas. And then, being addicted to sensation and excess, they perhaps like to compose music that uses both chords together or one straight after the other.
I am only getting started, but basically I think that they would have far more interesting taste in music than simple and repetitive compositions with lyrics about sex, drugs and roll n roll (perhaps very Slaanesh for a mortal but tame as fuck to anyone that has been there and done that already), or listening to wobbly fart sounds.
