Saw this described as slow and character-driven, which I do love in a fantasy sometimes.

Have previously read one of the author's books, which showed at least some promise? Also had no romance, yay!

YA (but admittedly the cover + description didn't immediately scream YA to me)

Author's other book I previously read wasn not the greatest... my review says it was narratively a bit of a jumble that didn't quite work, but it also has a star rating worse than this one.
