In X Apocalypse Averted AU, after Kamui begins an apprenticeship as a furniture maker (so a carpenter for, you know, themes and motifs), his inspiration comes initially imagining people using it.

A dual chair and rest bed for Yuzuriha and Inuki.

A rocking chair for Arashi and her child.

So on and on…

Until one day, he thinks about the structure of his apartment, gets to work on measuring the corner of the wall where a beat-up sofa was, and estimates someone’s height.

The next time Subaru crashes at Kamui’s apartment, instead of the sofa, he finds a dual sofa/pull-out bed, already made and ready.

Subaru asks if it’s a prototype, but Kamui shakes his head.

“I made it with you in mind, so I’m not sure if it would work for anyone else.”

It’s a simple fact and Kamui’s perception, but it makes Subaru continue to feel that Kamui’s apartment was the closest he would ever feel to having a home again.

“What can I get to bring in return?” Subaru asks as he lies down, with Kamui at the door way to his own bedroom.

Kamui’s face turns pink, as he’s about to open his mouth, then pauses, before muttering “he’ll think about it and get back to him.” Before shutting the door.

The bed is warm, and the sheets and blanket are soft, and Subaru sleeps long and deeply.
