I just began Matsukaze by Kan’ami (revised by Zeami) and it has swept me off my feet. Yukihira’s Poem No. 16 is so direct and pure. I can’t help but be reminded of the lyrics to the uncountable Uttam-Suchitra ballads my grandmother feasts her ears upon every Sunday afternoon.

First is the hell of Ever-renewing Wounds, Next the Hell of Iron Cords, The Mountain of Swords, the Hell of Boiling Oil, The Hell of Hideous Screams, the Hell of Terrible Burning, The Hell Where You're Pretty Sure You're Going to Have a Very Bad Sore Throat Tomorrow, You Can Kind of Feel it Happening Already, The Hell of Unendurable Fire, And last, the Bottomless Pit Where she hurtles head over heels, To suffer unending torment For three years and three months.
