They do this to honor a legend.

The legend being that a jealous sharp-toothed demon hid inside the vagina of a young woman the demon fell in love with and bit off penises of two young men on their wedding nights. After that the woman sought help from a blacksmith, who fashioned an iron phallus to break the demon's teeth, which led to the enshrinement of the item

This magical gem I just stumbled upon was just 10 minutes of research.

Kanamara 'Penis' Festival today. A few more pictures from our trip to Kawasaki yesterday for Kanamara Matsuri/ our anniversary. There's a giant Buddhist temple complex and shopping/food district here that we'll need to come back and check out more fully. These are from the end of the festival, right before we headed home. I LOVE all the Daruma shops.
