I love this kind of discussion. I also like the idea of having state jewelry, but like with the Finnish jewelry, how or who would step up to make state jewelry for the US. So much of our labor is now outsourced. I mean other than the ironworkers union who do we have to do such a thing?
Oh but also I completely agree with you on tiaras and FLOTUS. It would be a huge PR and political disaster. As if this country isn't already divided enough, I can't imagine the vitriol we'd see coming from some people.
I was already thinking a little about what American state jewelry would look like so forgive my tangent.
I think it would have to be made by Tiffany & Co. They are the American jeweler to me and they still produce a lot of their jewelry in the US with facilities in New York, Kentucky and Rhode Island. Since 2019 all of their precious metals have either been recycled or mined in the U.S. I love the idea of using recycled materials like Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s Naasut Tiara that was a gift from Greenland. It was made with recycled gold coins and the gold was originally mined in Greenland so if they could follow that and use recycled metal that was originally mined in the U.S. that would be ideal.
As for gemstones, I would want Montana sapphires which Tiffany already uses. Here are a few of their Montana sapphire pieces.
It’s never going to happen in a million years in the U.S. because it would cause so much controversy but I can dream.
