January kanzashi

For a while I was thinking about writing something about the seasonal January maiko kanzashi that traditionally change each year. Each year I wait impatiently for the new design to be worn by maiko since I became interested in everything Japan related. Soon enough I also got interested in the years past, so I spent many hours browsing the web, asking questions off the maiko expert (Geisha-kai) and comparing the photos I found etc, etc... Till I managed to find some fair bit of information. I only followed it yearly since 2009 but before that I had to find my answers. I did managed to get quite far with the online research and did come up with the kanzashi for each year up until year 2000, are you impressed yet?

So I plan on making a single post for each year with the design details, will you follow me on my journey for the next 17 days?

I will show you the photos of the ones I have made already, but there is still a long way to go for me to make all of the 17 designs, so for some you will need to use your imagination for now!

Ume - Plum flower hairtie made with kanzashi technique. 

The plum is associated with the start of spring, because plum blossoms are some of the first blossoms to open during the year. The white ones are the symbol of elegance and sophistication and the red ones are considered to be the incarnation of touching and sparkling beauty.
