Why I like them

Uhmmmm honestly I think I started liking him at first because I gravitate towards characters in otome/otome-like games that are very obviously deeply down bad for the protagonist from the jump. Happened with mammon obey me as well I'm afraid. Also I love a mama's boy <3. And same as izumi he's just hot sorry

Headcanon

Estrogen could save her. Also one of my angstier headcanons is that he looks nearly identical to his father and dyes his hair blond to look more like his mother. Something else that estrogen could help with now that I think about it 🤔🤔

Unpopular opinion

Why were people mad about him confessing to anzu in that valentines scout a couple months ago like seriously did we not all see that coming ? Guys we can still have our yaoi even if he's canonically in love with a woman. You know that right?

A wish

Can I be honest and say I want more overtly freaky cards for him. I feel like even though he's one of the biggest yumebait characters and in one of the most risque units, he surprisingly doesn't have a lot of content like that. At least not enough by my standards smh

I know I just said that I don't mind his confession for anzu but please please don't actually put him in a canon relationship with anzu. Not because I don't want anzu in the way of my yaoi or anything stupid like that but because she's already brushed off his flirting so many times and is clearlyyyyy not interested, it would be such a disservice to what little character we have of her to have her decide she does want him actually

OH I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED. Allow me to introduce you to my beautiful slutty blond wife who I hate but also love dearly, Kaoru Hakaze

He is. Such a fascinating character to me. I'm not as well-read on him as I am on my other three enstars faves but the core of who he is to me is that he's just a guy who misses his late mother so so much. She meant the world to him and it hit him hard when she passed, especially because he already had a strained relationship with his father and both of his older siblings. So pretty much the entirety of his personality, particularly in the earlier stories, is defined by the various ways that grief manifests

Realizing I actually have a good bit to yap about when it comes to him so I'll put the rest under a cut lmao

But yeah he kind of ends up basing his entire worldview off of his love for his late mother and his disdain for his father, and that severely impacts how he views gender in general. In early stories, he spends his time chasing after women, trying to find in them what he loved and found so comforting about his mom, while avoiding all the men around him, even the ones in his own unit (he's at this point a major slacker because of this lol)

And because his view of the world is also pretty warped by heteronormativity, this leads to him only pursuing romance and not making time for friendships at all, which. Y'know. Not healthy

I think the biggest exception to this early-on is his friendship with Kanata. Another thing that's important to note about Kaoru is that he really loves the ocean (which also stems from his love for his mother, as she was a marine biologist and took him to the beach a lot before she got sick). Kanata is also a character with heavy connections to the ocean and has the gentle, comforting presence that Kaoru is trying to find in his relationships with women cause of how it reminds him of his mom, so he's able to get along with him a lot easier than other guys. (Kanata also has a beloved late mother who's part of why he loves the ocean which I think also helped them bond, but this aint about Kanata). There's a really sweet scene of them on the beach together in one of Kaoru's major early stories that really gets me cause it's one of the few times we see Kaoru actually allowing himself to be vulnerable at that point. And I personally believe that it's his friendship with Kanata that allows him to open himself to the possibility of really making friends instead of focusing solely on romance

There's also his relationships with his two older siblings, particularly his sister. It's also important to note that his family is like rich rich, and because of this, his sister is being set up for an arranged marriage, and Kaoru's feelings over that are a huge overarching plot point over several of his important stories. But Kaoru also feels super guilty over causing her and the rest of his family trouble by choosing to become an idol instead of going into the family business, and that guilt prevents him from really reconciling with her for awhile, and because they're not particularly close at that point, he's left to just fester in his worry over her arranged marriage. Luckily for both of them, the marriage ends up working out really well for her and that overarching plot is resolved with a really sweet event where he and the rest of his unit perform at her wedding

Uhhh I think that's all the really important stuff about him but yeah :3 I love this guy a lot...
