I am... unsure about this episode. While the action was nice and all, there were things that just threw me off.
1. Ash’s lose to Bea. Because of the descriptions leaked of the upcoming episodes, it was something everyone expected to happen. Now, I’m upset Ash lost or anything. It was perfectly justified with the given circumstances: Bea’s experience and the Pokemon Ash used. It was that he kinda took the lose rather... over dramatically. Even though winning and losing are crucial factors for this series due to how the World Coronation ranking system works, Ash’s lose didn’t really pull him down that much and regardless, Ash usually takes losing pretty well, usually only feeling down if it meant severely harming his Pokemon (like that one match with Paul in Sinnoh).
2. Goh telling Ash that he shouldn’t be so cocky. Yes, he and Ash are friends and friends are supposed to watch out for each other, but the thing I find off-putting for something like this is that it’s kinda portraying Ash and Goh to be equals in a sense of experience, which is obviously not true.
3. By biggest gripe with this episode: Goh defeating the Karate Master. For those who don’t know, one plot point in this episode has Goh fighting the Karate Master, getting the choice of either Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan if he were to win, just like in the og games. However, this plot point was entirely off-screen, without even a single indication of how the battle turned out. (ex. signs of fatigue on Goh’s Pokemon) The problem with this is that we know Goh isn’t as experienced in battling as Ash, so the fact he apparently defeated a skilled trainer without any proper preparation/training on his part just seems wrong. This is just me, but Ash and Goh shouldn’t be that equal to each other! If anything, Ash should be the mentor figure to Goh as a representation of his growth from Alola.
Ugh, looking forward to the Alola episode(s) every minute...)
