Der veraltete Begriff “Karfunkel” oder “Karfunkelstein” ist vor der mineralogischen Einteilung solcher Kristalle in Granate, Spinelle, Rubine und Rhodochrosit, usw. entstanden. Damit bezeichnet man einen derart feurigen Edelstein, dass er so aussieht, als stiegen Funken davon empor – kurz gesagt, einen blutroten, funkelnden Stein.
Inzwischen ist leider eine zweite Bedeutung dazu gekommen, nämlich jene häßliche Beule… Schade, wie man heutzutage die Poesie der alten Sprache besudelt!
