HBO’s nine-part documentary series about the salacious details surrounding the multi-level marketing self-help sex cult NXVIM and its bizarre founder Keith Raniere (aka “Vanguard”) is both a fascinating and frustrating experience.

Thanks to extensive behind-the-scenes footage compiled by documentarian and former senior member Mark Vicente over many years, the in-depth look shows in detail how so many smart, successful, and mostly privileged white professionals were seduced by such a problematic leader despite so many clear warning signs. However, its jarringly constructed narrative jumps back and forth through time and different subjects in order to create artificial tension over the course of so many stretched-out episodes while constantly killing any momentum built. Regardless, the real-life material is just so damn captivating.
