Woke with this and the American election churning in my head.
Good luck America.

Listed: Emma Hospelhorn
Emma Hospelhorn is a jazz and improvisational flutist who works with Ensemble Dal Niente, The Machine is Neither…and her solo art-folk project Em Spel, whose The Carillion Towers Jennifer Kelly reviewed last year for Dusted, calling it “ folktale turned oddly, surreally modern, a magical realist scenario set in the right now.” Hospelhorn’s Em Spel project has a new single coming out on her own Carillionia Records in August, the ominously beautiful, “My Oldest Friend.” A new full-length is on deck for 2024.
Here is a list of music that inspires her.

Karima Walker Live Preview: 2/10, Constellation, Chicago
BY JORDAN MAINZER
A year ago, Tucson-based sound artist and singer-songwriter Karima Walker released Waking the Dreaming Body (Orindal Records/Keeled Scales), her first album in five years and one that’s maintained serenity for me when times have felt tumultuous. Combining folk instrumentation and stylings with synthetic sounds and field recordings, Walker creates a world filled with perspective. Her songs look inward, but they’re not so much insular as they know their place within the vastness of the cosmos, natural or spiritual, earthbound or celestial. She recorded the album almost entirely herself, an incredible achievement for an album that buzzes with such abundant richness.
Thursday at Constellation, Walker headlines the Orindal Records showcase. When I interviewed her last February, she hadn’t yet performed these songs live in person and had done only one stream. The seats at Constellation seem like the perfect place to take in Walker’s reflective soundscapes. Advance Base, the melancholy basement electronic singer-songwriter project of prolific Orindal Records founder Owen Ashworth, along with Sarah Jane Quillin of Desert Liminal, also perform. The show is presented by Local Universe. With 10 dollars and proof of vaccination in tow, go experience what’s sure to be one of the best live shows of the year so far.
