Antique Swedish Karl Johan Biedermeier Sofa or Settee

Rare antique Swedish Karl Johan settee/sofa in superb restored condition. Hand-crafted of native golden flame birch and reupholstered in black hair cowhide leather, this settee is very comfortable according to modern standards. Furniture made in this style was known as "Karl Johan" beginning around 1818 in Sweden - named after the Swedish king of the era - whereas the term "Biedermeier" originated in Germany and Austria. Now the name "Biedermeier" is used to describe the aesthetics of this clean-lined, elegant form of Northern European decorative arts, regardless of origin.

The hall is made to seem longer by repetition of the decorative elements - kilims, Swedish chests of drawers, Karl Johan chairs covered with kilim, and a large collection of engravings from William Cavendish’s 17th-century book on horsemanship.

I've been gone for quite a while, haven't I? Well, check out this book I found at our library, and it's about Bernadotte! (Karl Johan, king of Sweden after Gustav IV. The so called "French king" cuz he was adopted from France haha)

It's a comic book telling the story about how Bernadotte ended up as the Swedish royal family! If you're interested in Swedish history, and even if you're not, you should check it out. The art is really cool.
