My latest troll drawing reminded me of something Iāve been wanting to make a post about.
In the English language media Iāve seen trolls are generally depicted as big and stupid, though occasionally theyāll just be small and primitive.
And donāt get me wrong, we also have that here in Scandinavia as seen in the Norwegian movie Troll Hunter.
But trolls from nordic folklore are a lot more nuanced than what modern English language media would lead you to believe.
In folklore they are a sort of hidden nature people with cultures that varies between countries and towns. They can be cruel or kind. In Norway they can smell the blood of Christians and eat people, while in Denmark they donāt mind Christians but canāt stand the sound of church bells and will often move at the first sign of a church being build.
Theyāre also closely entangled with humans. Trolls steal human babies so they can raise them to go places trolls canāt (in Denmark at least), but leave their own babies with the humans assuming humans would find use for someone with a trollās strength and abilities.
And thatās why in more modern troll media for adults theyāre often used as a sympathetic allegory for people who feel wrong and out of place.
You got the Swedish movie Border from 2018 about a woman who couldnāt feel more wrong. People think sheās ugly and weird and she canāt even have sex because thereās something wrong with her genitalia.
But then she meets a man who looks like her and he slowly reveals that theyāre both trolls and the only reason she feels weird is because sheās trying to live the life of a human. Sheās a perfectly normal troll. It even turns out that troll men give birth and her āweird genitaliaā is meant to impregnate, not be pregnant.
Thereās also the band De Underjordiske (The Underworldly which is an old Danish word for otherworldly people that live under ground like trolls and dwarves) from Denmark who have the song Trold about Nordic people in general feeling off because weāre forest trolls who long to return to nature, but also Under Skyggernes Kniv (Under the Knife Of Shadows) about a person asking a troll that has lived their whole life under ground to not be afraid and come up into the sunlight and meet people and the video shows a person who appears to be dressing up as a woman for the first time and trying to live an authentic life.
So trolls are often very queer coded in modern Scandinavia which might sound insulting if youāre and outsider whoās only familiar with the English language version of them but makes a lot of sense in context.
ā while in Denmark they donāt mind Christians but canāt stand the sound of church bells and will often move at the first sign of a church being build. ā In Sweden we say that giants (giants are sometimes seen as just being big versions of trolls) hate the sound of church bells ringing, and they get so angry that they throw giant rocks at the buildings to make it stop.Ā And thatās how swedish people explained all the large boulders laying everywhere! Interestingly, some also said that that is what caused the islands Gotland and Ćland to be. some giant got really angry, took a bit of land (which created the two lakes VƤnern and VƤttern) and threw them. Nowadays we have explanations to all of these phenomena... Unless the government is actually just a bunch of trolls trying to hide their past of getting drunk and throwing rocks everywhere by coming up with a cover story! ...
Or it was just the iceage... but thatās boring
Me a few years ago: Ah yes I haven't drawn Karl XII yet I should probably do that. Let's see if I can find any paintings as refere-
The paintings:
He's either baby-faced, a 50 year old dad, handsome squidward or straight up something from the habsburg family line and I don't know which one is the real Karl XII lol. Like I just wish they could've simply agreed on a way to paint him but noo now he has brown hair, nooo now he has blond hair- NOO he has NO hair I'm just messing around. I did figure out a way to draw him in the end, but as someone who gets confused by faces (plus I am a perfectionist) it was really stressful haha
Vasa
Today my Math teacher asked me why we built a whole museum forĀ ājust someā ship. Well, good question!Ā
As a non-proffessional, I can only tell you my own opinion on things. Iād say what makes the Vasa museum so special is itās importance for many different historical fields.
For archeologists, the most important part what we found on-board the ship, and the restoration and fixing-up. When the ship was first brought up above he surface, it was only half of what it is today. Lots of scattered pieces of wood and skeletons layed all over the sea bed. making the ship suitable for showing proved to be quite difficult, and would take several decades. Itās considered the most difficult solved pussle in the world for that very reason!
They found clothes, masts, forks, hats, canons and lots of other interesting every-day items from the 1600ā²s!
For historians, itās the story surrounding it thatās been so important. Gustav II wanted to build morale by building the biggest and most pompous ship thereās ever been, and it was going to be named after his granfather, the founding father of Sweden. Gustav Vasa.Ā
For architects it was even more impressive. The ship is extremely huge, but is the grand example of how to not build a ship. Too many canons on either side, too tall, and not wide enough. though the paint-job was extraordinary. The ship only sailed for 15 minutes.
My point is, thereās way too much information surrounding the ship NOT to build a museum. The museum is huge, and every time I go there I find something new. Itās not just a boat. Itās a ship.Ā

1PrinceĀ Adolf Ludvig Gustav Fredrik Albert of Sweden, or his original name: Couchi. Couchi was born 1747 in a Danish colony somewhere in Africa.Ā
His parents died as a result of their home burning down when he was young, and so when he was 10 he was shipped off as a slave to EtastrĆ„tet (an old Danish title) āReiserā who would later give him away to Queen Lovisa Ulrika of Sweden as a present.
Lovisa Ulrika decided to take thisĀ āopportunityā (ew) to test if an African could fit in among white people if he was raised like one.
Couchi lived with the royals in Sweden as an assistant to Lovisa Ulrika. She has said that she saw him as the son she never had. (Lovisa Ulrika had three sons already so I- bro) He was calledĀ āBadinā by the Swedes, as it meantĀ āJoke, silly, weird, oddā. That is why I prefer to NOT call him that, though you will find that most people in modern day history know him for that name anyway.
He loved reading, which fitted Lovisa Ulrika quite nicely since she herself was a bit of a reader. Couchi was to a lot of support for her after her husband, the king of Swedenās death.Ā After Lovisa Ulrikaās death, Couchi would go on to serve Lovisaās daughter Sofia Albertina, who seem to have been very fond of Couchi, with him even writing a poem about her on her birthday.
Though he had been lucky to not be shipped off to work as a farmer slave somewhere, it is very clear that he faced a lot of discrimination through his life. All from his name, to Gustav III calling himĀ āBlack manā instead of by his name at times, not even getting the chance of aĀ higher status among the royals despite his hard work and love for languages, books, poetry and theater.
I call him prince because technically, he is. He was adopted by a queen, and so he deserves that title after all that he had been through. Honestly he looks like such a nice guy heās so cheerful.Ā
Adolf Ludvig Gustav Fredrik Albert Couchi. 1747-1822
The forgotten prince of Sweden.
The stages of my art. I forgot to save some stages throughout the drawing, that's why I didn't add the shading part to this post.
Drawing of "Sweden" (I'm making "Sweden" "Denmark" and "Norway" their own characters since my versions of the characters have gone so off the rails with their own personalities. They're like, no longer stereotypes haha. I'll credit the SatW comic for the inspiration to the characters tho of course. I love SatW)
He's watching the castle "Tre kronor" burn to the grown. As an immortal, or as they're called in my story: "Witnesses", he pretty much grew up in that castle. It was his only connection to the time that was before all the trauma that happened to him at the end of the Kalmar union.
So the castle burning down kinda made him finally snap. That's the problem when you're immortal. Since you outlive everyone, you have to get used to heartbreak. The only copying you have is having friends who are also "witnesses". But for "Sweden", it isn't like that. Since he lost his only two immortal friends after the liberation war back in the 1500's, the only one he can relate to is his sister.
That castle was the only thing reminding him of the time when he was friends with the other two. "Denmark" and "Norway".
Do you guys have any suggestion on what to name these characters? Because I could really use some help haha.
Please help me come up with some names haha. I have so many ideas for art I can make, and maybe even some comics. But I need some good names for the characters.
Happy new year! Here is the 3rd and last part ofĀ āThe return of Karl XIIā, my 24 hour comic from Oslo 24h challenge 2018.Ā

17. Kids: Goodbye Karl XII!Ā
Dude in car: Hey, cool costume!Ā
18. Driver: Are you going to some sort of reenactor thing? My sister is into that stuff.Ā
Karl XII: So this is a ācarā?Ā
Driver: Already in character, I see!Ā
Karl XII: What happened to horses?
Driver: Awesome zombie makeup too, by the way!
19. Driver: Here we are!Ā
Karl XII: thanks for the lift. Now that Iām here in the city, I could sneak unnoticed into the fortress⦠the gates are open and unguarded! How sloppy!Ā
20: Even the inner gates are open! But where are all the people? Itās completely quiet here⦠No, wait⦠I can hear something.
21 Karl XII: w-what? Where are my troops? What happened here? Have they all retreated without my orders! In that case, theyāllā¦

Karl XII: What am I doing here? I, once among the most feared warriors of the world⦠now, iām reduced to a forgotten joke!

24 Person: Carl XII! Come on, everybodyās waiting for you!Ā
Everyone: Happy birthday to you,ā¦
God, I remember when I bought this comic. It was amazing haha, I read it as soon as I had bought it from you at the comic convention. I bought bothĀ āThe end of the Swedish empireā comic and this one. Itās what started my interest in the great northern war.
You keep talking about how you made it in such a rush, but in my opinion, thatās what makes it so fun to read and look through! Itās got a cool charm to it.Ā

Hereās a drawing I did of I guess uhh⦠My own headcanon of SatW Sweden during the late 1600ās and early 1700ās. (The great northern war) The speedpaint will be uploaded on youtube either today or tomorrow. Depends on if Iām able to finish the video editing today or nah. Iām actually really happy with how this turned out! I wanted it to have a cold setting to⦠Well I guess represent the winter battles the Swedes had against the Russians during the war. Itās a serious setting. Neither sides were good nor bad. But of course, that is understandable when war naturally is never āgoodā. Many soldiers fought and lost their lives to protect their families and countries on both sides, and I think itās important to remember that we shouldnāt glorify the countries involved, but rather remember what happened. The northern wars should never be seen as something to look up to. Just as any other war. It was started with selfish intentions and ended as such too. History should be remembered, not loved. Me myself drew this because I think itās fun to express and put the history I learnt onto paper, and I want to share the stories! And putting the history Iāve learnt into stories with characters such as SatW Sweden, it makes it easier for me to process, but also makes it more fun to draw and talk about! I almost wanna make a version of this drawing but with Russia, standing on the other side of the battlefield. Comment if youād like to see that! Love y'all! I hope you liked it! :D

Reasons to be Lesbian (Swedish history edition)
Number one: Jenny Lind (1850ā²s opera singer)
Number two: Zarah Leander (famous singer during Ww2)
Number three: Princess Charlotte of Sweden (Late 1700ā²s)
Number four: Queen/King (She was crowned king) Kristina of Sweden.
And reason number five: TO NOT HAVE TO MARRY THIS GUY (Karl X of Sweden who almost got to marry queen Kristina. Plus he was kinda in love with her and she wasnāt in love with him back, plus Kristina was kinda Lesbā herself, PLUS, THE BIGGEST PLUS THAT IS: THEY WERE COUSINS)Ā

Imagine the castles I could make with these!
That makes it sound like Iām gonna make castles OUT OF candles...

NEW ROCKY-ROCK BLOCKS FOR BUILDING COOL-OLD-STUFF-HOUSES!
Iām really not the best with words today.
Letās not forget that weāll get to do what I literally love the most;
Art and archaeology
The possibilities! Like you could probably make so much creative stuff with these bad boys!
And I could use this new vegetation and flowies to replicate the Visby wall! I am so excited for this. I canāt wait!
