Okay, can I please have an extended scene of “The Soulmate Phenomenon”? The part where Gon and Killua had fallen asleep watching Spongebob clips on YouTube! I’d love for you to write that part.

“I should go...” Killua’s whisper floated through the air and Gon’s eyes snapped back open.

“Wha--no!” He wrapped his arms tightly around Killua’s bicep, ignoring the slight sting of static along his wrist where his soulmark was branded into his skin. 

(He never really understood why his skin stung with a small shock whenever he and Killua touched, but he didn’t let it bother him. Killua was worth any bit of pain, because Gon had never met anyone quite like him before. Time seemed to fly by when they were together because Gon had fun with Killua, and Killua had fun with him. 

And, in the end, that was all that really mattered.)

“Please,” Gon added when Killua bit down on his bottom lip. “Killua, we finally got up to the good part of the episode. You can’t go now!”

“It’s late, though. If I don’t leave soon, my parents will--”

“You live next door,” Gon interrupted, drowning out Killua’s weak protests. “It’ll take you five seconds to sneak back into your house.”

When Killua continued to look conflicted, Gon shifted to grab onto Killua’s hands--static crackled down Gon’s arm at the contact and a part of Gon relished in it. If he could feel the static, it meant Killua was still here at his side. He tightly squeezed pale fingers and put on his best pout.

Killua’s conflicted expression crumpled in an instant. He sighed heavily, saying, “You’re going to get me in a lot of trouble one day, Gon.”

Gon’s pout melted into a beam. “Don’t worry,” he said, snuggling closer to Killua and resting his chin on Killua’s bony shoulder. “If you get in trouble because of me, I’ll be sure to rescue you.”

Gon’s body shook as Killua quietly laughed. “Good,” his friend murmured, squeezing Gon’s fingers back. “I’ll be counting on you, Gon.”

David Bowie had been studying Tibetan Buddhism since 1965, if not earlier. So while his “Karma Man,” which he cut a few days after The Beatles and their spouses had decamped (in a blaze of press coverage) for Bangor, Wales, to be initiated into the Maharishi’s teachings, may have seemed like a trendy affectation, it was actually a sequel to Bowie’s earlier Tibetan homage “Silly Boy Blue.”

Bowie’s final solo acoustic number of the Paris Cinema Studios BBC Radio session is Karma Man. This is his oldest song of the set, it having been around since mid-’67. It was first recorded as B-Side to a single that never happened, then the following year it appeared on a previous BBC Radio session. Both these versions are orchestrated – in both senses of the term. Beautifully stage-managed and wonderfully arranged. A dramatic mise-en-scene built with woodwind and strings. Here we get something far rawer. It’s Bowie channeling Dylan. The acoustic guitar is thrashed, the vocal phrasing of the song is downplayed, drawled. What we get here is a pop tune turned inside-out. It’s another clever move on this this four song acoustic introduction to the Paris Cinema Studios set. After this, members of the Tony Visconti Trio – soon to be renamed Hype – will join Bowie on stage. This version of Karma Man is another song that didn’t get included on Bowie at the Beeb (1990) with the recording from the Bowie archive, and so all we currently have is taken from an old tape cassette used to capture the original 1970 broadcast.

Karma Man is the B Side of the unreleased Let Me Sleep Beside You single. And it’s another of Bowie’s lost masterpieces. The drums shuffle us along as we explore a Sunday faire, sideshows and tents, children running around, the sounds of music and the smells of food caught in the wind. And there – all alone, waiting, under shadowy canvas – is a Buddhist Monk. The descriptive lyrics of the first verse give way to more transcendental musings as the song progresses (Bowie was exploring Buddhism at the time, but would soon move on to Nietzsche). There’s an acoustic guitar played sitar-like, set against an orchestral arrangement that captures the late 60s pop scene. Just as with the A Side, there’s gonna be some choice versions of this in the years that follow… until then, peace-out man.
