armenian lesson 4: articles and gender

This week we’re going to discuss gender and articles in (Western) Armenian!

So let’s tackle gender first. In a lot of languages like French or Hindi, nouns have a specific gender that they need to be conjugated for. Just like English, Armenian doesn’t have grammatical gender in nouns!

Likewise, when discussing a person (or even animal in many cases) in a conversation or on paper or almost any other form of communication, you may need to state the name of that person a few times as well as provide context in order to help your listeners or readers identify the gender of the subject in the conversation.  

Let’s talk about articles now. The first is the definite article, which is “the” in English. In Armenian,the letter ը is added to the end of the word if it ends in a consonant. If it ends in a vowel, then ն

There are a few rules for this. For example if a noun ends in a silent յ, the յ is dropped and a ն is added.

If the word ends in a յ that isn’t silent, then a ը is added. 

Words that end in a ւ (pronounced as a v), also take ըfor their definite article

Sometimes words that end in consonants may take ն instead of ը, but only if the next word starts with a vowel:

Տղա-նալ, աղջիկ-նալ - both the boy and the girl Ծառ-նալ, պտուղ-նալ - both the tree and the fruit

Secondly, let’s talk about the indefinite article, “a/an” in English. In Armenian, the indefinite article մը is placed after the word.

Տուն մը - a house Գնդակ մը - a ball Պարտէզ մը - a garden Շուկայ մը - a market
