She’s surprised by the gift Choji gives her, not because she’s not expecting anything. It’s in character for Choji to present her with a little gift every time they see each other.
No, she’s surprised because of the detail that went into the gift. The careful planning and preparation.
This is more than a small box of chocolates or a nice statue. She can tell that Choji took his time preparing this present, which is impressive since it’s a bouquet of flowers.
The easiest present to get in the world, and Choji had gone out of his way to add a personal touch to it. A list of the flowers in her bouquet and their meaning.
Lavender Roses- Unique love
Laughter vibrated in her chest, just barely concealed by her hand as she read the list. “Unique love?” She peered over at Choji, unable to stop herself from smiling when his face split into a wide grin. “And what’s so unique about it?”
“Well, for one I love you because of your kindness,” he explained, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. “Although you are the most beautiful woman I have ever met.”
A suck-up. That’s what he was and she loved it.
Deep Pink- Gratitude
“What do you have to be thankful for?” She bumped her shoulder into his side playfully.
“You choosing to love me.” The answer came to him with surprising ease. As if it was the most natural answer in the world. Like there was no question in his mind about the sincerity of his words.
“You’re thankful that I chose to love you?”
“You have a world of men to choose from.”
“And I chose the best,” she reached up and poked his nose, the butterflies in her stomach fluttering around when his smile softened a little under her touch. “I mean that, Choji.”
“I know.”
Turning her attention back to the list, she continued reading.
Burgundy Rose- Devotion
“Since when do you know the language of flowers?” In all the time they had been dating he had never shown such knowledge before. Butterflies and food he knew, but flowers?
That was new.
“Ino helped me,” well, that made more sense. “She asked me what I wanted to say with the flowers and picked each one out, telling me what they meant so I could write them down.”
“You have a good friend there,” Omoi wasn’t quite as helpful with picking gifts for Choji, but he was always supportive. Giving her little pushes towards items he thought Choji might like, or telling her what she should say to get her feelings out when she was struggling.
He wasn’t always helpful, but she did appreciate the effort.
“A good friend, a good girlfriend. I seem to be lucky when it comes to the women in my life,” this time she couldn’t help but roll her eyes. The words just sounded so cheesy, she almost couldn’t believe they had come from his mouth.
“Well, you bought me flowers,” a gift she would cherish forever, and perhaps if she got an opportunity she would stop by the Yamanaka shop to ask Ino for some pointers on how to care for them so she could keep them as long as possible. “How about I pay for lunch?”
If Choji wasn’t already clearly in love with her, she could tell he was falling in love at that moment. The way hearts seemed to dance around his eyes at the mention of lunch.
“Come on,” she slipped out of his arms and stood, holding out her free hand towards him. “It has been a while since I’ve had BBQ.”
