She is the princess of Vaishali and the maternal cousin of Krishna, Shishupala and Dantavakra. Shishupala kidnapped her from her home and delivered her to Dantavakra, the then-prince of Karusha.

She is the daughter of Shuktimati, and the wife of Uparichara Vasu, who carried a displaced strand of the Kaurava kingdom. She is a local woman, who Vasu probably married also to strengthen his hold over the new kingdom he had won.
Her sons are Vrihadratha, Pratyagraha, Kushamba (Manivahana), and Mavella who later became Kings of various parts of Vasu's kingdom- Magadh Vasumati, Chedi, Kaushambi, Karusha and Matsya respectively.
