So someone on reddit noted parallels between Guel Jeturk's story and a Russian short story about an abused dog who finds a better life, all the while missing her family - not even realizing how awful they were to her - before her original owner calls for her and she returns to that life without a second thought.
The clincher is that the ship Guel works on under a new name (just like the dog being renamed in her new life) is named after the short story, "Kashtanka", making it pretty explicitly intentional.
People on BSky are saying that "oh this means the writers never meant for him to be 'redeemed', he's an abused dog til the end" but, um, personally there's too much stuff the first cour of GWitch sets up that's dropped in the second for it to really feel that way?
Like, if they wanted to sell the idea that Guel simply returns to the same cycles and habits as before despite his stint as Bob and first-hand experience on Earth, they needed to have done something like, say, make him kill his brother in the same way as he killed his father?
Instead of just cowarding out on that mobile suit duel and having them both survive.
Fundamentally, in the anime that exists, Guel being very heavily implied to have thrown his last duel with Suletta, and letting her go, is framed as a redemption of his character. That's the correct way to view it.
A few new characters on Limbus: Bazarov, Jane Eyre, Kashtanka, Consuelo, Peter and Wendy, Chatsky, Lena (Scarecrow).
Bitter Love(2020) dir. Jerzy Sladkowski
П. Чехов
He {the cat} would have been glad not to wake, for, as was evident, he was not greatly in love with life. Nothing interested him, he showed an apathetic and nonchalant attitude to everything, he disdained everything and, even while eating his delicious dinner, sniffed contemptuously. (”Kashtanka” by Anton Chekhov, translator unknown)
Kashtanka! I love her bright yellow bands. I feel she will be more yellow than her mate, Boggart, who is orange.
