what he means: As interesting of a character he is, Chat Noir would honestly be my least favourite ML character if he were anybody but Adrien. The fact that Adrien IS Chat is such an important part of the series and it gives an insight into both Adrien and Chat’s personalities and behaviours. Without Adrien, Chat is an annoying, cocky kid who can’t read social cues or signals, who makes puns and can’t take anything seriously, and without Chat, Adrien is a bland, privileged, sad rich kid with daddy issues and a missing mom. Chat being Adrien’s persona, Adrien’s ESCAPE from a life that he didn’t ask for, is so important and really fleshes out his character. If Adrien acted like Chat in his civilian life, it wouldn’t be as impactful as the fact that Adrien is soft-spoken in his day to day life. It shows the viewer how Adrien sees Chat as a way to become someone else, going from one extreme to the other, to see how far he can get away with acting nothing like himself, which is something he can’t do at home. In the teenage years it SO important to be able to play around with labels, to try and find out who you are and make discoveries about yourself, and Adrien isn’t allowed to do that, he has to keep up an image, for his father, for the brand. But as Chat, the only duties he has are to make sure the city is safe and to inspire hope into the people of Paris. As Chat, Adrien’s the one who gets to call the shots, he’s the only boss of himself (sometimes Ladybug too, but Chat’s fine with that). Chat Noir is Adrien’s way of coping with the loss of his mom, the pressure of being an Agreste, the distance between him and his father, the cold life of being a celebrity. This juxtaposition of two personalities that are nothing alike is an impertinent part of Adrien’s characterization and gives him some much-needed depth.
