a/n: look at that, i managed to write another fic before six months went by! it's a bit shorter but it was weirdly fun to write, even though i still can't tell if i'm messing up kate's characterization or not. let me know if kate's ooc because i have not done my homework (aka rewatched hawkeye in like two or three years). anyway, that's all, hope you enjoy <3

If there's one thing Tony Stark is know for, it's hosting galas and then finding a way to not show up to them.
It's usually not a big deal. He plans them, spends far too much money inviting people and journalists, and then finds a way to spend the night hiding in the garage, working on his old Iron Man suits. It's a good strategy but unfortunately, it's never shared with you which means while he's off avoiding everyone, you're stuck socializing with strangers all night. On its own, it could possibly be fine, except you also have to spend the night answering questions you have no real answers to and pretending it's not gross to hear so many people drool over your dad.
Though maybe it would be worse to have to see it.
Then again, hearing it is just as bad. Especially when your own girlfriend takes the joke a little too seriously.
"Hey you," Kate greets as she slides up next to you, pretending like you weren't making out in a supply closet less than an hour ago. "Are you sure he's not going to show up tonight? 'Cause my mom keeps telling me to behave."
"I think she's just trying to be helpful to your terrible reputation," you reply, reaching out to fix the collar of her shirt that you absolutely did not mess up on purpose earlier. "That or she still thinks she has a chance of convincing him to let her join the company."
"Probably." She swats your hand away to fix her shirt herself. "Makes no sense, though. Isn't Pepper the one in charge now, anyway?"
You nod. "Unofficially. He just likes being the face of everything for some reason."
The little smirk Kate gets is the only warning you have that she's about to be a little shit. "I mean, you can't blame him, it's a beautiful face."
"You're so gross," you groan.
Your annoyance only makes her smile wider and you suddenly understand why everyone thought the two of you hated each other at first. You probably make quite the picture, her with her stupid grin and you with you glare. Then again, as long as the rumors don't reach your dad, you don't care what people say about the two of you.
"What? It's true." The sincerity in her tone almost makes her comment worse. At least she has the decency of grabbing two drinks from the waiter that walks by and handing you one.
"I guess, but it makes it seem like you're just with me because I share a face with him." You literally shudder at the thought, the cheap champagne doing little to wash away the bad taste the image leaves in your mind.
Kate pulls her signature "thinking about what else to say to annoy you" face, her free hand reaching out to brush your fingers. "No, he's still more handsome."
"Oh, shut up already," you mutter, taking another sip of champagne and letting her fidget with your fingers.
Your annoying archer doesn't seemed deterred by your words at all. "Make me."
It takes a lot of self-control to hold yourself back from smiling. However, your self-control isn't strong enough to stop yourself from reaching out to tug at her blazer and pull her closer. It helps that everyone around seems to be too invested in their own conversations to pay attention to what the two of you are up to. "You're a brat."
She just smirks wider. "You like it."
You take the opportunity to slide your hand under her blazer, fingers tracing shapes up and down her spine just to watch her shiver. "I prefer you on your knees, though."
"I think that can be arranged, Ms. Stark," she murmurs, leaning in closer.
"Don't make promises you can't keep, Bishop."
She's about to reply when the sound of whispers grows too insistent to ignore. You both take a step back just in case before you look around, finding the culprit at the door, with Pepper trailing behind him and a champagne glass in hand, looking unbothered as ever.
"Oh, of course," you mumble under your breath, making sure to take an extra step away from Kate.
"I thought you said he wasn't going to show." Though she tries to put some humor in her tone, she's just as annoyed as you are...mainly because now you have to pretend to dislike each other again.
"Well..." You shrug. "He hates being predictable."
While there might be more to say, it can't be done when all the journalists around start searching for you, clearly waiting for an opportunity to snap a picture of you and Tony. So, you swallow your annoyance at being interrupted and leave Kate's side. As optimistic as you want to be, you have a feeling you won't be seeing her until the end of the night. And that's only if you manage to leave the venue without your dad tagging along.
You can't let those thoughts cloud your mind, though. Especially not when all the vultures around are fishing for the next big story. As annoying as it is, pretending you and Kate are rivals is better than the alternative. The last thing you need is all of New York watching your relationship unfold and hoping for your downfall (because drama is always more entertaining).
That's how you end up spending most of your evening moving around the room, pretending to be interested in whatever dumb conversations people are having. It's exhausting and boring and the second you see Kate move out of the main room and toward one of the side hallways, you don't hesitate to follow.
You excuse yourself from the group you're with and make your way out toward the hallway, pausing to make sure no one's looking too hard.
Something grips your wrist as you walk past one of the many doors and before you can blink, you're pulled inside, a hand coming up to cover your mouth before you can even think to gasp. "Did you miss me?"
Despite the loud sound of your heartbeat in your ears, you relax back into the steady body holding you close. You still make a point of biting at her hand so she lets go. "Yes, but you could have just texted instead of being dramatic."
Her arm tightens around you and when she pulls you closer, you grind back against her hips just because you can. "Oh, but this is so much more fun."
Well, who are you to argue with that?
You turn around in her arms, your hands coming up to cup her face and pull her in. Kate moves willingly, her smile almost distracting you too much to actually kiss her. You've been waiting for hours, though, so you force yourself to focus and give yourself over to the moment...and your ridiculously gorgeous girlfriend.
"Have I ever told you how much I love it when you wear a suit?" You murmur when you pull away, your thumb stroking her flushed cheek.
The brunette pulls a mock-thinking face, her eyebrows furrowing adorably. "Hmmm, I don't remember, why don't you tell me just in case?"
You barely suppress the urge to roll your eyes, choosing instead to kiss her again. If she minds, she doesn't even try to announce it, choosing instead to pull you impossibly closer to her.
Your hands move down from framing her face to slide under her blazer, fumbling blindly with her stupidly tucked in shirt. Kate chuckles against your lips at your impatience, moving back just to tease you.
You're about to complain when the silence between you is interrupted. The door to the supply closet opens abruptly, flooding the small space with sudden light. The enclosed space doesn't give you any room to pull away from Kate and all you can do is brace yourself for the picture that is most definitely going to be taken.
Instead of a bright flash or the sound of a camera shutter, you hear the loudest sigh known to man. "Jeez, kid, you couldn't find a better hiding spot?"
Of course. Of fucking course. The universe has quite the sense of humor, it turns out.
"Oh my God, it's your dad," Kate whispers to you. Unfortunately, because of close you all are, Tony absolutely hears her.
"No shit it's her dad." His eyeroll is far more dramatic than it should be. "You couldn't go home or something? I did not need to see this."
"I'm not happy about this either!" You reply. "You were busy at the bar last time I checked."
His glare is almost amusing. "Hey, I paid for it, might as well take advantage of it."
"Listen, I'm-"
"Not talking to you, Bishop. Really not interested in any details, just get out of here before someone else finds you."
You laugh despite yourself, the embarrassment of the situation melting under Tony's relentless sass. You can't tell if he's keeping things relaxed for your sake or his, but you don't really mind either way. At least he's not scolding you for making out with the successor of a rival company.
"Fine, but I don't want you complaining if someone says they saw me leave before the party's over," you say, your hand finding Kate's and squeezing before she freaks out.
"Yeah, yeah, just get going, kid. We'll talk tomorrow."
"No, we won't," you mumble and earn yourself another glare.
Despite that, Tony doesn't try to stop you when you start walking past him, dragging a blushing Kate behind you. It's not until you make it to the elevator that she finally breathes again.
"Holy crap, that sucked," she says, running a hand through her messy hair. "Do you think he's mad?"
"Probably not, he didn't even try to threaten you."

warnings: none just some flirting and a bit of drama (we´re staring slow)
an: first part of this fun series, wohooo, i truly hope you’ll like it! i’m super excited! happy Mother’s Day to all the mommies out there;) hit me up pls
"Welcome everyone... to the very first season of The Love Initiative!" The camera glides over sunlit villa, white walls, glass doors, pool that would be too big for twenty people and a lot of very pricey decorations, before settling on Sam Wilson, the host, standing in a custom burgundy suit.
"My name is Sam Wilson, I´ll be your host and before you ask... yes," he adds, smirking, "this is exactly what it looks like. Ten days. One villa. A group of very attractive, very single women... and one person who´s about to have their life turned upside down." He starts walking.
"Here´s how it works. Our contestants will be living together right here," he points at the villa, "bonding, competing, falling in love... or at least trying not to start unnecessary drama." Sam pauses, then shrugs, "actually, scratch that, there will definitely be drama." A quick glance at the camera, "you´re welcome."
Sam then gestures toward a seperate part of the villa, "and then there is the one and only. Our lead. The one making all the decisions. The one everyone´s here for." Sam smiles, "(Y/N)!"
"Now (Y/N) won´t be living with the others. They get her own private apartment, a little peace, a little quiet place to think... and to question every single decision they make over the next ten days."
"Each day, they´ll go on fun dates, face new challanges and get to know the women who are all here for one reason... to win their heart."
His tone softens just slightly, "and at the end of it all... they´ll choose one person. One woman to leave this villa with."
A beat of silence.
"No preassure, right?" Sam chuckles. "So get comfortable. Get emotionally invested. Maybe don´t pick favorites too early, trust me, never ends well." A pause, then a grin on his face. "because if there is one thing I can guarantee... it´s that sparks will fly!"
Right. So... this is really happening.
You stare at your reflection like it might suddenly give you an explanation how you got here. Here is a beautiful villa bathroom, that is definitely more expensive than your entire apartment back home, about to participace in what is essentially... a televised speedrun of your love life.
Which to be fair, needed help. A lot of help. Because if you´re being honest? Your romantic history could be summed up in three categories - almosts, what-ifs and that one time you thought girl was flirting and she was just cursing at you in another language.
You let out a quiet breath, leaning your hands agasint the sink. So the only solution to your problem is going on a fully televised dating show. Because if you were going to make questionable life choices, you might as well commit.
You straighten slightly, eyeing yourself in the mirror again.
Ten days. Ten days to meet a group of women who are all here for you. To go on dates. To figure out feelings. To... somehow choose one person at the end of it.
Your future girlfriend. Potentially your future wife. No pressure. None at all. Totally normal. This is exactly what well-adjusted people do. You huff out a small laugh, shaking your head. This is very normal gay experience.
The main hall is ridiculous in person. Beautiful ridiculous, to be specific. Warm golden lighting, tall windows, elegant furniture and at the center of it all is a stage framed by soft lights and large flower arrangements.
You stand just out of frame, smoothing your hands down the front of your clothes for what has to be the hundredth time, trying and failing to ignore the pounding of your heartbeat.
From somewhere beyond the cameras, Sam´s voice carries through the room, Unlike someone, he sounds very confident and overall effortlessly charming. "Now, before be begin, let´s talk about the person at the center of all this."
A large screen flickers to life. And suddenly you´re watching yourself. Pieces of you. Quick flashes of a life that feels oddly intimate, seeing it on the big screen now. Of course you remember them shooting it before you went to villa, but seeing yourself with friends in a coffee shop, or walking throught the city with headphones on, reading in your apartment or other candid moments where you look soft, free... it´s weird to see yourself through the eyes of someone else.
Sam narrates over it all, "smart, kind, funny..." he pauses, "questionable taste in food combos, according to production notes." A quiet laugh from the crew, "but most importantly? Someone who has a lot of love to give. And maybe, just maybe, is finally ready to let herself receive some back." The montage ends.
"And now..." Sam´s voice lights with very theatrical excitement. "Here they are- the one and only..." He grins towards the camera, "(Y/N)!"
Oh god.
That´s you.
That is, unfortunately, your cue.
You step out into the light, trying your best not to look like you´re internally screaming. The camera turn and everything suddenly feels very real. Sam meets you halfway, immediately offering the kind smile, that takes some of the edge off.
"Well," he says, gesturing toward you, "welcome in the villa, (Y/N)!"
"Thank you, it is very crazy to be here... in a good way, of course." You laugh, nerves making it come out breathless.
Sam chuckles, leading you toward the center of the room, both of you settling into the easy rhytm of conversation. "How are you feeling?" He asks, softer now, genuine.
You exhale a nervous little laugh, "honestly?"
"Please."
"Terrified. Excited, Slightly nauseous. But mostly excited."
Sam nods seriously, "that´s exactly how I feel every Thanksgiving with my family, so I´d say you´re doing great."
That pulls a real laugh from you, it definetly helps loosening up the nerves.
"Alright, but now the important question."
You immedietly narrow your eyes, "that sounds dangerous."
"It is," Sam folds his arms, "what is your type?"
You think about it for a second before shaking your head, "I... honestly don´t know if I have one."
Sam blinks, "no type at all?"
"No. I mean- obviously I find people attractive, but I´ve never really had a strict type. It´s more about the chemistry, I guess. Personality. Connection."
Sam hums, glancing toward the large closed door at the other end of the hall. "Well," he says, dragging out the word, "that´s actually great news."
You raise a brow, "oh?"
Sam smiles, mischievous, like he knows something you don´t, "because behind those doors..." he points dramatically, "we have plenty of types."
Your stomach flips, not in a bad way. Just in a holy shit this is happening way.
Sam catches your expression and laughs, "so... final asnwer," he turns towards you. "Are you ready for all the ladies?"
You glance at the door, at whatever, whoever is waiting behind them. You smile happily and nervously at the same time, "I am."
Sam claps his hands together, "that´s what I like to hear." He steps back, grin widening. "Then let´s meet your future heartbreaks- I mean..." A beat of silence, "... potential soulmates."
The door open, and the first woman steps through. Sam´s voice carries smoothly across the hall, "Natasha Romanoff!"
You forget how breathing works. She moves like she owns every room she enters, not arrogantly, but with a quiet certainty, that makes the whole space shift around her. Her blonde hair falls in a soft waves over one shoulder, she´s dressed in sharp black tailoring softened by silk. It looks expensive, that´s for sure.
Every detail about her feels unreal. Her gaze lands on you, unreadable at first, then softens, just enough to make your stomach completly betray you.
She steps close, offering a small smile, that already feels like a marrige proposal. "It´s lovely to finally meet you, (Y/N)."
Her voice is velvet and low and-
Right.
Words.
You should use words.
Preferably right now.
"Hi," you manage.
Excellent start.
Natasha´s smile curves slightly wider, amused and she brushes a loose strand of hair behind her ear before stepping to the side. Your heart is doing concerning things.
Sam leans closer, "you´re staring, (Y/N)."
"I know."
"Do you need a minute?"
"I want medical assistance," Sam laughs and so does Natasha.
Then the door opens again and Sam speaks up again, "Wanda Maximoff." As your eyes meet hers, somehow things get worse.
Or better.
Definetly worse.
Definetly better.
Wanda walks in like the wind throught tall grass, effortless, grounded. Her hair falls loose around her shoulders, slightly messy in a deliberate way and she´s dressed in dark jeans, boots, layereed necklaces and a worn flannel hanging open over a top, that reveals strong arms and sun-kissed skin.
You are immedietly in love with at least three things about her. When Wanda speaks it´s simple and casual, "hey you," but you nearly fold in half.
"Hi," you breathe, somehow even less coherent than before.
Wanda smiles and she joins Natasha. You look between them. Two most beautiful women, already devastating.
How many women are left? God.
Sam softly pats your shoulder and he chuckles, "you´re doing great."
"I´m fighting for my life."
"That´s good for the fans." He smirks, then he looks at the door again. "Another lady to the group, Kate Bishop!"
Oh.
This one looks like trouble.
Kate walks in like she´s entering a stadium tunnel before a championship game. Broad grin, shoulders back, confidence radiating off her in waves. She´s tall, athletic, dressed in jeans with sneakers and fitted blazer over a shirt. She absolutely knows she´s hot.
Which is horrible. She knows exactly what she does to people. Her eyes flick over you and brighten immediately, "well, hi there."
That grin becomes flirtatious in half a second, "you´re even cuter than production said." Heat floods your whole face.
Sam makes a delighted sound beside you, "oh, she´s fast."
Kate laughs, stepping closer to shake your hand, but her thumb brushes lightly over your knuckles, deliberate enough to make butterflies explode violetnly in your stomach. "It´s really nice to meet you, (Y/N)," she says, softer now. Then with a wink, "can´t wait to win."
She´s competetive, cocky, charming. You are so unbelievably doomed. Kate joins the other and you stare blankly ahead. Sam glances at you with a smirk, "how are we feeling so far?"
"I´ll tell you later, just keep them coming," you mumble out.
Sam laughs, "got it, lets tear off a band-aid. This is getting better and better, ladies and gantlemen. Welcome Yelena Belova!"
A blonde woman enters with the energy of someone deeply unimpressed by everything and somehow that makes her impossibly magnetic.
Lather jacket, dark shirt, rings on her fingers. Cool confidence worn loosely, like she´s not trying to impress anyone and somehow impresses everyone. Her hair is slicked back, her expression dryly amused, eyes sharp yet soft enough to hint at something warmer beneath.
She stops in front of you, looks you up and down and then she nods once, "good."
You blink, "good?"
Yelena shrugs, "you seem interesting. I was hoping for interesting." Then after a beat, "also pretty. Bonus." Sam physically turns away to laugh.
You feel your soul leaving your body, which makes Yelena smirk, "oh this will be so fun."
You´re still trying to recover from Yelena, when Sam straightens beside you and grin suspiciously. "Oh, (Y/N), you´re pretty much in gay heaven."
"Or hell, it´s hard to tell, to be honest."
Sam nods, with a chuckle, "very true. I´d say both is very entertaining." The doors open again and Sam´s voice rings out, "Carol Danvers!"
And another confidence walks in. Not the quiet kind, like Natasha´s. Carol walks in like she´s used to stepping into high-pressure situations and coming out on top. Tall, huge shoulders, strong arms that look sculpted by the gods themselves. She´s wearing tailored trousers and a fitted white button-up with sleeves rolled neatly to her elbows, showing toned forearms and a sharp watch at her wrist. Devastatingly attractive.
There´s a bomber jacket slung casually over one shoulder like she just stepped off a runway and a military base. Her blonde hair is swept back and her smile...
Her smile is trouble. Very cocky, yet very warm. Her eyes meet yours with immediate focus, it´s like she chooses what deserves her attention and right now, somehow, it is you and only you.
She steps close, offering her hand, "Carol." You take it and immediately notice two things, her grip is very firm, yet her hands are soft.
"It´s really nice to meet you," she says, voice smooth and sure. One of her corner of her mouth lifts, "I´ve heard there´s competetion here."
Your pulse jumps. Carol glances towards the lineup of women already gethered, sizing them up in one efficient sweep before looking back at you. "That´s alright, I like the competition."
Kate from across the room, lets out a small offended laugh, Carol only shoots her a grin. You can feel the instant competitive energy in the room.
Sam whistles, "looks like it´s hot and we barerly even started, that´s what we like to see. Just don´t fight yet, our medic is starting from tomorrow." He looks around, "just joking." Sam looks at the camera lenses and mouths "I´m not... anyway Agatha Harkness, everyone!"
This woman walks in like trouble has been flirting with her for years. Strong hands. Worn boots, that hit the floor with deliberate weight. Dark jeans, a white tank and a weathered flannel hanging open over it, sleeves rolled. Her hair is slightly messy, silver streaks catching the light in a way that makes her hotter. She looks older than the others.
Her whole energy says 'I know exactly who I am.' Agatha walks up to you with a smirk on her face, "oh," eyes dragging over you, "well done, producers."
You nearly choke, hoping that the medic is close, just in case. Sam laughs, "she likes you," he winks to the camera.
"I gathered," you mumble weakly. Agatha then steps close enough, that her woodsy and smoky cologne briefly wraps around you.
"Pleasure to meet you, sweetheart," she says with a teasing grin. "Let´s save everyones time and just-" she offers her hand, while Yelena snorts at her offer. Kate grins knowing exactly what is Agatha doing, while the rest just watches, hoping that you won´t fall for her tactics.
Before you can finish, Agatha´s expression changes, only slightly, but you see it. Her eyes cut sharply towards the doors and her jaw tightens. Like she suddenly senses something unplesant and Sam knows what the unplesant thing is. Or rather who. "Interesting," Agatha mumbles.
You were so deeply wrapped in Agatha´s cologne, you didn´t even realize, that the door openned one last time. Sam looks at the camera knowingly, "last but not least, Rio Vidal."
Rio moves calmly, measured and dangerous. Dark tailored slacks, black silk shirt with the sleeves rolled once at the wrist, rings on her long fingers and dark hair in a bun, showing her sharp cheekbones. She is beautiful in a way, that definetly feels intimidating. Like everyone instinctively makes room for her.
Then her gaze lands, not on you, but on Agatha. And slowly, very very slowly Rio smiles, "small world."
Agatha lets out a humorless laugh, which makes you confused, "you´ve got to be kidding me." You are glancing from one to another.
Wait, what?
Agatha measures Rio, but then she walks up to her spot, where other ladies are, some trying not to laugh, some smirking, knowing this will be a hell of a ride.
Rio finally looks at you and her entire expression softens by a degree. Which kinda makes it worse, because now all that intensity is directed at you. She takes your hand gently, brings it toward her lips, not quiete kissing your knuckles, but close enough, that your entire nervous system short-circuits.
"(Y/N)," Rio says, voice velvery smooth. "Pleasure."
"Oh, she is absolutely not using my dating moves on national television," Agatha mumbles so only Carol can hear.
Rio walks up next to Agatha, but she quickly changes with Carol, so she stands between them. You stare at the lineup and you swallow hard.
"These are our contestants and this is what we call premium television." Sam smiles, gesturing to the ladies.
Natasha elegant and unreadable. Wanda steady and wild. Kate grining at all the ladies. Yelena amused, but sharp. Agatha glaring like she is planing a murder. Carol as a big ball of confidence. And lastly, Rio pleased with herself.
Everyone one of them is impossibly beautiful and you feel so drawn towards them. Your stomach is doing crazy things, not only butterflies but a whole damn zoo. You lean towards Sam, "I think I´m in trouble."
Sam smiles, eyes bright with mischief, "oh, honey." He gestures towards the women, "you were in trouble the moment you walked in. At the end, you are in The Love Initiative!"
꩜ ۫ . SUMMARY :: you only agree for the archery lessons because natasha recomended you to. you thought it’d actually be clint barton teaching — not some purple-wearing, overly confident, stupidly gorgeous brunette who keeps making your heart trip over itself.
꩜ ۫ . PAIRING :: kate bishop x new avenger!reader
꩜ ۫ . WARNINGS :: fluff, slow-burn, accidental kiss, light humor, nat being close to an aunt figure to you.
꩜ ۫ . WORDS COUNT :: 2.6k
You didn’t really want to take archery classes. Well, you liked archery but having to take the actually classes seemed like too much of a time filler but Natasha believed that if you were more experienced in it and had a bonus ability, it'll be beneficial for missions.
“It’ll help you focus,” she’d said. “Besides, Barton owes me a favor.”
So here you were, standing in the middle of a dusty training facility, holding a recurve bow upside down and questioning every life decision you’ve ever made.
“I thought Clint was teaching this,” you mutter when the tall, lean figure struts toward you with a smug smile and a ponytail.
“He was,” she says, pulling off her purple jacket and revealing slightly toned arms that do not belong in a Disney princess movie. “But he’s ‘retired’ or something. You get me instead.”
“Wow. Observant and pretty.”
You blink. “You’re definitely not Clint.”
You hesitate, then shake it. Her grip is firm, somehow warm but annoyingly confident, too.
She offers her hand. “Kate Bishop. World’s okayest archer.”
“I didn’t realize I signed up for sarcasm lessons.”
“Bonus round,” she grins. “You’ll thank me later.”
Lesson One:
You’re Terrible At This
Your form is bad—like, embarrassing bad. The first arrow barely leaves the bowstring before it plops to the floor like a sad stick. Kate winces like you’ve just stabbed her dog.
“Okay. Wow. That was criminal.”
You roll your eyes, “Gee, thanks. I feel so encouraged.”
“I mean that with love,” she says, biting back a laugh. “Okay, not love—just pity. Which is basically the same.”
She steps closer, much closer. Too close.
One arm snakes around your waist, the other lifts your elbow gently. “This needs to come up,” she murmurs near your ear. Her voice is warm, smooth but most importantly distracting.
You don’t move. You can’t. Not when her body is flush against your back, guiding your fingers, her breath brushing the side of your face.
“I… I don’t think this is regulation distance for a lesson.”
“It’s the Kate Bishop special,” she whispers. “Relax, I don’t bite. Well, unless it’s pizza.”
Your breath stutters. You fire the arrow, just to escape the moment. It flies slightly better than the first.
“Progress,” Kate says brightly. “We’ve gone from ‘tragic’ to ‘tolerably bad.’”
“Can’t wait to add that to my résumé.”
Lesson Three:
You Start Looking Forward to Them
You come back. Again and again, not for the archery, really, but for her.
For Kate’s dumb jokes, for the way she hands you your arrows like it’s an inside joke, for the post-lesson pizza she insists on ordering “for fuel.” Somewhere between lesson three and five, you stop flinching every time she touches your elbow, you start noticing the way she tucks her hair behind her ear when she’s explaining something, the way her laugh makes your chest do weird fluttery things.
Natasha :
Natasha texts you exactly once during week two.
You:
How’s it going with the bow?
Natasha:
I hate you.
You’re welcome.
Lesson Five:
The Kiss That Wasn’t Supposed to Happen
It’s a late-night session, the compound’s practically empty & you’re both running on leftover Chinese takeout and an argument over whether pineapple belongs on pizza (Kate says yes while you’re morally opposed.)
You fire an arrow that barely misses the center of the target.
You’re proud, though.
Kate whistles. “Okay, okay! You’re not tragic anymore. I’d call that almost hot.”
You turn, a playful raised brow. “Almost?”
She shrugs, walking toward you. “I have standards.”
“Oh really?” you ask, stepping into her space now. “And what would qualify as fully hot?”
She raises a brow. “Asking for a friend?”
“No,” you say, braver than you feel. “Asking for me.”
Something shifts in her face, the teasing’s still there, but it’s softer now. More real.
Her hand lifts—hesitates—then tucks a loose strand of hair behind your ear and that’s when it happens.
Somehow, some how, your lips brush.
Just a second, just a press. But it lands like a firework.
Then, that's just when it clicks,
“Shit,” Kate breathes, stepping back so fast she nearly trips on your dropped bow. “That—wasn’t—I mean—I didn’t—”
“Did we just—”
“Totally accidental,” she blurts. “Like gravity or amagnetic mouth pull.”
You stare. “Yeah. Magnetic. Mouth pull.”
“Yep. Real phenomenon, very serious. Probably physics.”
You laugh. You can’t help it. “You are such a disaster.”
She groans, rubbing her face. “I’m sorry. That was—unprofessional. And stupid. And—”
You interrupt her with a smile. “Do it again?”
She freezes.
“…What?”
“Do it again,” you say, quieter now. “But on purpose this time.”
She stares at you like she’s short-circuiting. Then Kate Bishop kisses you again.
Soft this time—Sure, Confident, like her hands when she steadies your arms during practice. Her lips taste like ginger chicken and a little bit of victory.
She pulls back first. Barely.
“I swear,” she whispers, nose brushing yours, “if you shoot like you kiss, you’re going to be unstoppable.”
You smile against her mouth. “Guess we’ll find out next lesson.”
. . .
The next time Natasha sees you, she just gives you a look.

You weren’t like most princesses, you were upfront and very bold. Not afraid to say things in your own way.
It always led you straight to trouble.
Your parents claimed you shouldn’t speak to people in that manner and deemed you unfit to be a princess because of it.
Unfortunately for them it was in your blood and you had no desire to turn down the throne.
But it did make you more rebellious.
You’d sneak out more, have fun at the nearest tavern where everyone there was sworn to secrecy just because you seemed sweet and weren’t snobbish like they assumed you’d be.
You thought you were good at sneaking around until one night your mother was waiting for you beneath your balcony.
The look she gave you was one of a kind, pure disappointment.
You’ve seen it plenty of times.
Although this was a bit different.
She made you go back inside the long way, instead of climbing up the thick vines and then had a very long talk with you about getting a personal knight.
With the tone in her voice you knew you were in no position to say no nor complain, much less interrupt her but because she knew you so well, she let you speak.
“I don’t want someone following me.”
“It’ll be a waste of time.”
“I don’t want one.”
She gave you a look and stood up, “it was not a suggestion.”
“Either you pick one by tomorrow midday or I’ll choose one for you.” She said and left you alone with your thoughts.
It was the following day and you received news from one of your handmaidens that your mother was out for the day.
Your father was always busy and it was a rarity when you’d get to see him anyway so you figured what was one more night of some freedom?
The day flew by as you did some of your princess duties so you leaving wouldn’t look so awful if she were to discover you were out again.
You said your goodnights to your favorite handmaiden and guard and went up to your bedchamber, closing the door shut.
You quickly walked to your bed, unlacing the back of your dress before slipping out of it. You then unlaced your hoopskirt and threw it off to the side by your wardrobe.
Your hands opened both doors of the pretty wood, fingers going through the different textures of your less elegant dresses.
These were for ordinary days or for your late night adventures.
You chose a long, fluffy blue dress, mostly enough to cover everything including your feet. You slipped it on quickly before bending down towards your bed to grab some black boots.
After putting them on, you walked over to your balcony, grabbing a black cloak from your sofa and some coins you had on a jewelry box.
You put the cloak on, carefully slipped the coins into a pouch before stuffing it into your cloak pocket then opened the door to the balcony.
You walked out and the cold fresh air hit you, it was much colder than it was earlier in the day which was something you adored.
There was something so relaxing about your late night escapades. The weather always seemed to be kind to you and tonight was no exception.
The moon glowed beautifully past the clouds and the light breeze was perfect. Refreshing even.
You took a deep breath before letting it out and walking towards your balcony.
You swung one leg over the railing and then the next, carefully moving your feet down to the very thick branches and vines that hugged your corner of the castle.
The greens made your home look friendly, and in your eyes charming. It gave it texture and a pretty look.
You begged the gardeners to always keep it.
Mostly because it was genuinely pretty like that and because of course, it became your way out of the castle.
You moved down carefully, already used to doing this but still wanting to be cautious just in case. Once you took more steps down, you went faster, almost doing it impatiently.
When your feet hit the floor of the outdoor garden, you sighed.
You turned to the right and caught your breath.
All you had to do was go straight, over one last railing, onto the green grass, and you’d be free.
You took a single step forward when you heard a noise.
A small snap and the slight sound of armor moving.
That was when you noticed a figure move from the hedges that were to your right.
It was fairly dark out with only a select few candlelight’s lit. The mystery person came up to the one near you and you stood still, holding your ground — noticing their knight armor.
They came up and gave a small bow, as if not fully acknowledging you. They lifted their head up and your eyes locked.
“Your highness, that didn’t look very safe.” She spoke and you raise an eyebrow.
“I’m not one to make safe choices.” You reply, standing still.
“I can see that. Might I add that they aren’t smart ones either..” she says, you tried to fight back a glare.
“Are you giving me lessons on decision making?” You ask before taking a step forward.
You looked up at her and folded your arms against your chest, “Because I don’t think I need any from someone I don’t know.”
She ignored what you said and took another bow, “Pardon me princess, my name is Kate Bishop and I’m now your personal knight.”
“I didn’t-“
“Your mother went out of her way to find me and personally asked me to watch over you.” She explained, standing up straight.
You sigh, shaking your head, “I’m sure you won’t last long Ms. Bishop, they never do.”
“Well that’s for me to decide now isn’t it?” She retaliated and you shrugged.
“It is so I guess we shall both see,” you say before taking a deep breath and adding, “you can tell my mother I’ve outgrown being babysat though.”
Her mouth almost curved into a smile, instead a low chuckle came out, “I was hired to keep you alive and it seems the tantrums have begun even though you believe you don’t need a babysitter..”
“This is hardly a tantrum Ms. Bishop. Now if you excuse me..” you answer and take a step forward.
She steps forward as well, blocking your path, “I’m afraid you’ll have to excuse me..”
She didn’t touch you, but barely by an inch.
She was a bit taller than you, not so intimidating or maybe she wasn’t trying to be.
“I’m not letting you leave.” She says quietly.
“Please move.” You order and she stays put.
“Unfortunately I only follow your mother’s orders.” She replies and clears her throat.
“Now I think it’d be in both our best interests if we don’t have to resort to getting physical with each other.” She suggests and you narrow your eyes at her.
“It doesn’t have to be that way.” She adds slowly and you reply, “you’re making it really hard.”
She chuckles and asks, “Am I?”
You nod, keeping a close eye on her, “you are.”
“Well I wouldn’t want our first meeting to end with me having to force you back to your bedchamber.” She says and you take another small step forward.
“Then let me pass.” You hum and she shakes her head, “you’re not leaving.”
You chuckled then huffed, “you’re funny.”
“I get that a lot.” She responds, making you scoff, “I’m sure you do.”
She chuckles about to speak but you beat her to it, “you should be a jester over a knight.”
“That’s not very nice.” She says and you shrug, “I’m not so nice. Maybe you should just walk away.”
“I don’t give up easily.” She responds, raising an eyebrow at you.
You smile, “I don’t either.”
You narrowed your eyes at her before quickly stomping on her left foot with your boot then pushing her back.
In the two seconds she was shocked, you ran past her, trying your hardest to get to the last railing.
You were mere feet away from it when suddenly arms grabbed you and she gently pushed you against the wall. Her hands were on your shoulders as you groaned and gave her a glare, not expecting this to be how your night would go.
The nearby candlelight wasn’t enough to see her features and the night was only getting darker.
But even with that you could tell she had some kind of colored eyes, as well as raven hair that certainly didn’t help.
If anything she was almost blending into the background.
When she first walked out you noticed she had her helm on her right hand and a bow across her chest. Her sword on its holster to her side.
At least she was prepared.
You could give her that.
“How do you know to use a bow?” You ask and she answers, “my father taught me when I was young.”
You look at the thin string, “Are you any good?”
“I never miss.” She replies and you nod.
You take a few seconds to think and quickly come to the realization that she might have a point.
It looked like she was much stronger and she was clearly faster so what other choice did you have?
You hated to admit when someone else was right so instead you sighed and gave her a little nod.
She nodded back and let you go, even taking several steps back.
You looked to the right and up at your balcony, thinking for a single second when you heard Kate move.
“I’d advise against that, princess.” Her voice warns and you sigh, “but it’s right there.”
“Have you ever broken a bone before?” She asks and you turn around.
You shake your head and she raises an eyebrow, “Do you want to?”
“That sounded like a threat.” You deflect and she chuckles, “it was more of a ‘what if’ possibility..”
“I’ve done this plenty of times before.” You respond, making her nod.
“I don’t doubt it..” she starts before suddenly asking, “how can you even see?”
“I have great vision.” You reply, sounding more ominous than you wanted.
“So you’re also going to make me take the long way back?” You test and she simply nods.
“Fine, have it your way.” You comply and walk past where you came from.
Instead you walked forward until you reached the doors to the indoor garden.
Now of course because it was late it was locked but your family was a little special. You had the slightest bit of magic running through your veins and it did little things.
For instance, just by your touch alone the door unlocked.
And the lights instantly turned on.
You let Kate step inside first before closing the door behind you, now locking once again.
She was waiting for you so you led the way past all the lively plants your mother adored. You walked past the pretty flowers until you laid your eyes on the gorgeous set of tulips.
They were in all colors and had their own section.
You admired them for a few seconds before leaning down to smell them. They were different from roses, they were lightly sweet and fine.
You pull away and lead the way towards the door that would lead you to the corridor.
The sound of her armor let you know she was about a foot behind you which meant she was taking this seriously.
For now.
You opened the door and she walked through before holding it for you. You walked past her and she let it close, you gave it a light tap so it could lock again.
Your magic was somewhat minimal, it was to help you a bit before you got older and become queen by then it’d only become more powerful.
You hummed before deciding to use a shortcut, it was getting late and might as well use your passageways to your advantage.
You walked to the right until you walked past three portraits, on the fourth you stood in front of it, pressing on the right side and it popped open.
It must’ve surprised Kate because she gasped, making you quickly turn and grin, “you can keep a secret right?”
She quickly nodded, “of course.”
“Good now go first so I can close it.” You order and she was about to cut in.
“Can you bend in those things?” You beat her, making her raise an eyebrow, “yes?”
“Didn’t you say you had knights before?” She asks and you nod before motioning for her to go.
“I have, it’s just.. been a long time...” you answer.
She nods and gets into the secret passageway. You quickly went in behind her and then closed it shut.
You walked past her and went up the stairs carefully, the little candlelight’s lit up as you moved.
“I thought you only followed my mother’s orders?” You teased and she kept quiet.
You couldn’t see her but something told you she fought hard to not laugh.
Once you got to the top you pushed the painting forward and it opened the same way. You climbed out and Kate followed suit.
She closed it for you and within a few steps you were in front of your door.
Your hand grabbed the doorknob before you turned to look at her, “will you sleep?”
“Not likely, it’s my first night with you.” She responds and you hum, “that doesn’t sound fair.”
She gave a little shrug, “I’m well prepared.”
“Suit yourself, goodnight Kate.” You say, giving her a little nod.
She nods and gives you a subtle bow, “Sleep well princess.”
The following morning, you were getting ready for the day, now dressed in a new sparkly blue dress. This one was big and poofy, since dance lessons are a part of your princess duties of the day.
When your handmaidens finished helping, they left and you walked out, expecting to find Kate.
Instead you found your usual night guard, Thomas.
“Where’s Kate?” You ask him and he bows.
You give him a curtsy and he responds, “She went to sleep when your handmaidens arrived.”
“She’ll be back when you take your fencing lessons today.” He adds and you raise an eyebrow, “isn’t it dancing lessons today?”
“I’m afraid it’s just fencing, princess.” He replied.
You scoff and close your door, “I might be losing it Thomas.. I swore today was dancing.”
He kept quiet and you tried to ask, “Are my parents-“
Just to receive a head shake.
You said your goodbye before heading down to the dining hall.
After breakfast you decided to go to the library since you still had time before your lessons were to begin.
Much to your surprise, you actually found your tutor and came to the sad realization that you mixed your days up.
After studying a few maps and other things, you were free to go. You instantly went to the fencing hall.
It used to be a room for etiquette lessons until you convinced your father you needed to learn to defend yourself.
He was fast to agree and had it completely changed.
You usually had someone teach you once a week but today was one of the days you’d practice alone.
Or at least before you had a personal knight.
When you arrived Kate was already waiting outside making you chuckle, “I see you’re still here.”
She gives you a bow before answering, “I told you I don’t give up easily.”
“Hm we’ll see about that.” You taunt and open the doors, walking in.
“And what will I get when I prove to you I’m not going anywhere?” She asks, making you laugh.
“You wish for a prize?” You snort, walking over to where your uniform was.
“Something like.. some gold?” You suggest and she shakes her head, “Not that.”
“Then what?” You ask and she shrugs, “I figured you’d be a little more imaginative.”
You’re quiet, unsure what to say or what to make of her words before shrugging, “Maybe a new sword.”
“So creative, my lady.” She says sarcastically and you bit your lip to not laugh.
You clear your throat, then point to one of the extra uniforms, “Okay there is another set if you want to change.”
“You want me to-“
“Yes, now please change.” You say and grab all the items before walking over to the changing room that was at the other end.
After you were both changed and ready, you walked over to the glass casing where the swords were.
You picked your favorite one and Kate came up, picking the one right next to it.
She then passed you a helmet and you smiled, “Thank you.”
“So you’re going to take it easy on me right?” You ask, purposely sounding extra polite.
“Should I?” She asks and you shrug, “well you’re a trained knight, I imagine this is what you’re good at.”
“That I am…” She hums and you nod, “Exactly, so you’ve got an advantage against me.”
You both walked to the middle of the room and onto the mat, standing across from each other at the on guard lines.
“We could do a practice round.” She suggests, making you nod.
“How do you wish to do this?” She asks and you hum, “just the torso?”
She nods and you both put on your helmets. You swing your sword forward and it moved fine.
You straightened up and nodded, “En garde!”
You held your sword tight with your right hand before taking slow steps forward. She took big steps forward so you took one big step and started to swing your sword against hers.
She did it back, slow at first until she saw you were doing it fast and attempting to get closer. She stood her ground and moved her sword right at your same speed.
The clash sounds was something you always found to be satisfying.
Even more when they’re equally fast.
She blocked your every attempt to tap her which has you quickly realize she was not going to let you win. Even if you made it seem like you weren’t any good.
She suddenly stepped forward and tried to poke you but you quickly blocked it.
The back and forth was the fastest you’ve ever done it which not only surprised you but excited you because you were going hand to hand with a knight.
You moved your sword with ease and stepped forward making her flick her wrist fast. She blocked your every attempt which only made you try to go faster.
It was nothing on Kate, making you groan and she just laughed.
She laughed.
You took a step forward, gripping the handle tightly, and started going a little rougher. She noticed and matched your intensity until you slowed down, took a big step forward and poked her lower stomach.
You cheered and she gasped, “you fooled me.”
“And I'll do it again!” You grin, making her chuckle.
You went three more times until you ended up tying. You decided you’d leave it there only making her claim you were afraid of losing.
You did the tiebreaker and won.
After that the rest of the day was so uneventful. But she kept her word on not giving up easily, she seemed more than committed.
She followed you around like a shadow the whole day until it was finally the end of the night and you went to sleep.
The following day passed by and you had more tutoring lessons, grasping more information than you wanted.
And you still had to go to your dancing lesson of the day.
Kate still hadn’t reported for duty so you just assumed she did give up afterall.
It wouldn’t have surprised you with the attitude you had given her after the fencing lesson.
After a long two hours of studying, you stood in the ballroom, actually early and practicing your turns.
You weren’t awful, if anything the suitors were the ones that needed the practice.
Not that they would be of any help to impress you.
That was just impossible.
Your ears picked up the noise of the small ensemble getting ready up on the balcony.
And the dance master hasn’t arrived so you worked on your posture.
He claimed yours was bad but really he was just much shorter than you and stubborn to get his payment even though you’ve improved majorly.
You stood up straight before taking small steps back and forth. A tune played in your head as you moved easily and your dress swayed with your every movement.
You’re not quite sure why your mother insisted on still having these since you were already a decent dancer and you weren’t exactly getting invited to any balls.
That was all you had in mind as you stepped and spun, too focused on your dancing that you didn’t hear the sound of armor coming in.
You held your arms in the positions they were meant to be in and when you did a slow spin, that was when you realized that Kate wasn’t gone and instead she had been watching.
You stopped and blinked, “you’re here.”
“And you’re dancing by yourself.” She spoke up, trying to not laugh.
“Well- no one is here so obviously I am.” You respond and this time she cracks a toothy grin.
Before she could respond the dance master arrived at last and the lesson started.
You danced with him but with the unfortunate height difference, it was just all wrong.
You even heard Kate laugh which made you huff, “you know it’s rude to laugh.”
She clears her throat then nods, “I wasn’t laughing.”
“Wow now you’re lying too?” You gasp, shaking your head, “I’ve ought to send you straight to the dungeon.”
She barely stifled a laugh back which made you smile.
The dance master cleared his throat and squeezed your hand, asking through gritted teeth, “would you prefer to dance with your knight, your highness?”
His tone was clearly annoyed and very sarcastic but you took it to heart, quickly nodding, “I would actually.”
All of a sudden Kate wasn’t laughing as you motioned her over with your hand. She reluctantly walked over as the dance master moved, looking visibly annoyed.
She came up to you and you smiled, giving her a curtsy while she quickly bowed.
She then stood up straight as you grabbed her covered left hand with your hand and her right hand went to your waist. You put your left hand on her shoulder and she easily started leading.
She had her helm on so all you could really see were her eyes, and barely because of the horizontal line.
Yet now you could see them, the ballroom lights were bright and you were even closer to her than last night.
They were a pretty blue color, almost the same shade as your dress which happened to be your favorite color.
Her eyes were just as locked on yours and you could somewhat hear the sound of the dance master’s voice but you couldn’t seem to focus on that.
Instead you focused on how you moved elegantly together, and her firm on you was perfect.
She didn’t hold you too tight or as if she was afraid to touch you, it was just right.
Most suitors had a horrible grip and were awful dancers so this was very different. It was all you had in your head as you tried to focus on the sound of the music instead.
You looked away and to where the little man was, only for him to suddenly be sat on a chair a few feet back. He didn’t look so impressed.
You fought an eye roll back and as if Kate noticed the same thing, she suddenly gave you a spin.
Your dress swished with the movement and after a full spin, your left hand went back to her shoulder.
You continued to dance and Kate even started moving around more, using the space of the ballroom as intended.
She spun you around more and you grabbed a bit of your dress, twirling it back and forth.
You usually didn’t mind your dance lessons but this time felt so different.
You actually kind of liked it.
It seemed you spoke too soon because the music came to its end as did the dance.
But you were both still holding each other, eyes locked on one another.
It was like that for a few seconds, comfortable silence as a new song started to play.
She then leaned in and said in a hushed whisper, “Thank you for the dance, your highness.”
You chuckle and nod, “No, thank you. I was getting tired of just dancing with him.”
“I can see why.” She whispers back, making you laugh.
You danced the next two songs together and it surprised you how easy it was.
You thought maybe you started on the wrong, stubborn foot so you decided to be nice.
And it led you to using the whole lesson dancing with her.
After getting scolded and belittled from the dance master until you couldn’t take it anymore, you reminded him of his place there, and excusing him to go fencing.
You then led Kate to the fencing hall.
As you walked into the fencing hall, Kate spoke up, “I can’t believe how he spoke to you.”
“Crazy right?” You chuckled and she nods.
“I think he forgets where he is sometimes.” You add, making her chuckle, “so nice of you to remind him.”
“See, I’m very nice.” You say and give her a grin.
She laughs then shrugs, “I never said otherwise.”
“Mm and you’re back to your lies I see.” You tease before walking over to where your fencing uniform was.
She laughed and sighed, “sure thing, princess.”
“Did your father also teach you to dance?” You ask, opening the case and taking everything out.
She shook her head then chuckled, “I’m afraid my father has two left feet.”
“My mother taught me.” She says and you nod.
“She taught you well.” You compliment, making her nod.
You had a rematch with her but this time she didn’t play nice whatsoever, now knowing you were actually good at fencing.
You thought you actually stood a chance against her but then she had no mercy that you lost four rounds in a row.
You decided enough was enough and gave up, prompting her to be all grins.
“Not so happy today princess?” She teases, making you groan.
“Shut up.” You mumbled, putting your sword and helmet away.
She chuckles and puts her things away too, “don’t worry I’ll go easy on you next time.”
After both changing back, you led the way to the dining hall before going through the kitchen doors. It was lively and full until everyone realized you walked in and took a bow at the same time.
You smiled and waved hello to everyone, walking in, with Kate following behind. They all went back to what they were doing as you made your way to the fridge.
You quickly got there and opened the doors, looking through it. You quickly found your bowl of fresh fruits and grabbed it before closing the fridge shut.
Your eyes went to the sink and you grabbed two forks from the washed side. You walked out and they all went back to how they were.
After leading the way to take a seat at the dining table, you put your bowl down and offered Kate a fork.
She shook her head and you hummed, “aren’t you hungry?”
“I’m not.” She says but because you were sat and she was a step behind you, you were able to hear her stomach.
“You’re an awful liar.” You tease and grab a blueberry with your fork.
“I don’t lie.” She replies, making you chuckle, “that’s your fourth lie in forty eight hours.”
You give her a look and she gives one back, almost giving you a playful glare. You gave her one back and she clearly fought hard to not crack.
But you were persistent.
She sighs and takes off her helm, “give me the fork.”
You smile, grabbing the extra fork and holding the bowl out to her. She picked a strawberry and devoured it.
You blinked and she smiled once she finished chewing. “Have you ate today?” You asked.
She slowly shakes her head and you blink again, “why?”
“I- was in a rush this morning.” She answers and you shake your head.
“How do I know you’ll do your job well if you don’t eat?” You test and she sighs, “I’m fine.”
“Have you drank water?” You ask and she was quiet.
You put the bowl down and stand up, walking to the dresser behind her. You were about to grab the pitcher, to pour her a glass of water, “you shouldn’t do this to your body.”
Instead of replying she grabbed your right hand which made you instantly freeze. You looked at her worried face but she wasn’t looking at you.
She pulled you back then quickly got in front of you as if protecting you from a threat before yelling out a code word out.
In about two seconds Thomas and a few other knights came in, quickly walking over to you. Kate talked to them, explaining what she saw while she still stood in front of you.
“Someone wanted to poison the princess. We must find the perpetrator fast.” Thomas announced, and you gasp.
The other knights rushed out and Kate finally turned, “you didn’t touch anything?”
You shook your head and Thomas takes a step forward, “are you sure?”
“Yes- I was about to when Kate pulled me back. What- how did you know?” You ask and look at Kate.
“There’s something on the pitcher, some kind of substance, from my angle it looked like it had a lot of shadows.” She answers and you blink.
“I assume there’s also something in the water as well.” She adds as Thomas takes a look.
He looked inside the pitcher from above and nodded, “it even looks different.”
“How did you not see-“ he starts to say when Kate cuts in, “she was talking to me.”
“She couldn’t have possibly seen it from up close.” Kate says, giving him a look, and Thomas nods.
“How would they know I would get water?” You ask and they both look at each other.
Thomas seems to be in thought when Kate thinks for a few seconds. She then straightens up, “the dance master.”
“He was angry during and after your dance lesson..” she explains and you hum, “angry enough to want to kill me?”
They shared a look before Thomas ran off, presumably to tell the others to look for the little man.
“Let’s go.” She says and puts her helm on before grabbing your hand.
She led the way out and to the eastern side of the castle, where the guest bedchambers were. She tried to open the first door she saw but it was locked.
She let go and you quickly twisted it and it unlocked. You went inside and turned around expecting Kate to do the same, “Stay in here and do not move until I come back.”
“You’re not staying? Wouldn’t it be better for you to be here?” You ask, eyes wide, and she looked conflicted.
She looked where you just came from and then back at you. You locked eyes and she shook her head, “No, no you’re right- they can handle it. I’m staying with you.”
“Your best idea yet.” You joke but she did not laugh.
Instead she locked the door.
“Is now the time for jokes, my lady?” She asks, raising an eyebrow.
“Sorry it’s how I deal with these things.” You mumble, walking into the room.
“What? Attempts on your life?” She asks and you nod.
“Word doesn’t usually leave the castle but it’s happened plenty of times before.” You explain, making her huff.
“I can’t believe it.” She mumbles.
“I’ve been training a bit nearby the past few years so I thought something like that would come up..” She answers, making you chuckle, “They try to keep it quiet..”
“I’m the only heir to our kingdom’s throne, I imagine that’s why my mother wanted me to have a personal knight again. Not just because I’ve been escaping.” You quietly admit before sitting down on the edge of the bed.
“What happened to your last knight?” She asks and you almost flinch.
“If you don’t mind me asking..” she whispers and you shake your head, “I don’t mind.”
You bite your lip, looking down at the floor as if it were the most interesting thing. You took a deep breath then let it out before looking at her but she took that time to sit next to you.
You slowly start to explain, “He.. he swore to protect me until his last dying breath.. he saved me from a kidnapping-“
“The kidnapping?” She interrupts and you nod.
You continue, “He found me and freed me, we were going the way he came in when my captor was suddenly behind me. He heard his steps and pushed me out of the way…”
You stop and take a deep breath before continuing, “I.. I couldn’t get myself to have another knight, not after seeing the life leave his eyes, and holding his lifeless body when my father came in before that man killed me.”
“I know they’re scared for me but I don’t like the idea of risking another human’s life just for me.” You admit, turning to finally look at her.
Her eyes locked with yours as she said, “We know what we’re risking and who we’d be saving.”
“I know. It’s in your oaths. But I can’t bear the guilt that comes with losing people like this. I get attached to people and it’s dangerous.” You say then sigh.
“Is that why you took fencing lessons?” She asks and you quickly nod, “it is.”
“My teacher has been secretly letting me use actual swords, I want to be prepared for anything.” You admit before putting a finger to your mouth.
You heard something.
Because of the little magic, your ears were surprisingly extra good at picking up sounds. Especially footsteps.
“Someone’s coming.” You whisper and she raises an eyebrow.
Ten seconds passed when a knock was heard on the door. Kate waited and another two were heard making her get up.
She unlocked the door and opened it, you saw Thomas and he quietly said, “we found him. His Majesty asked we restrain him and question him.”
You stand up and ask, “did he do it for someone?”
“That’s what your father wants to see, my lady.” He answers, making you sigh.
“And he’d like to see you both right now.” He adds and you nod.
“Both?” Kate asks, making you sigh, “let’s go.”
“Second day on the job and you’re already getting promoted.” You joke and she instantly laughs.
“Fastest anyone ever has.” You jokingly whisper.
You led the way to the throne room and there were already plenty of knights and the kings guards outside.
“Your Highness.”
You couldn’t tell who had said it but you gave a nod as they all bowed while you walked straight forward. The two by the door opened it for you and you walked in with Kate.
When you were both in, the doors were shut.
You suddenly couldn’t pick up a sound from the outside.
A sound barrier.
You wanted to crack a joke but you knew it’d only make them both explode.
Your parents were both yelling, while some kings guards were talking strategy. You cleared your throat and announced yourself, “Her royal highness, the luckiest princess alive.”
They all stopped and all eyes were on you. As well as on Kate.
Your mother ran up to you, quickly grabbing your hands before looking at your arms and face, "Are you alright?”
“Yes I’m alright, Kate pulled me back before I could touch anything.” You explain and she nods.
She let you go then moved to your right, grabbing Kate’s hands, “Thank you, I knew I made the right choice with you.”
Your father came up and you straightened up, “Is it something serious?”
“We don’t know yet.” He answers and pulls you in for a hug.
You hug him back and force yourself to not break down, now wasn’t the time for it.
“It was the poison that killed that prince a few years ago.” He whisper and you gasp, “so its deadly?”
You pulled away and he nods before looking over at Kate, “you saved my daughter.”
She nods and answers, “It was my duty, Your Majesty.”
“I still thank you for your bravery Ms. Bishop. Not a lot of men around here would have noticed.” He says and she nods.
He took a step to be in front of Kate before sticking his hand out to her and she quickly shook it. He held the top of her hand with his other one and sighed, “Thank you.”
“So what’s the plan?” You ask and your mother takes a deep breath.
“We’re going to keep him locked up until he confesses anything.” Your father says making you quickly ask, “and if he did this by himself?”
“Then we’ll have to kill him publicly for treason and attempted murder.” He answers and you nod slowly.
Of course, it was exactly what you imagined.
Now you could only imagine what your upcoming days looked like.
“And what about me?” You ask and your mother perked up, “What about you?”
You stayed quiet, unsure how to ask until she just gave you your answer, “you are to not leave your bedchambers until further notice.”
You stood still as they went back to the round table in the middle of the room, talking as if you didn’t exist. You couldn’t help but feel immensely disappointed and angry.
Not just because you couldn’t leave but because it was a direct order from the King and Queen.
Not from your father and mother.
There was a grand difference and you couldn’t help but feel utterly annoyed and at the same time, vastly sad by it.
Sometimes you thought they pretended to not know the difference but it was clear they did and only care for one part of your dynamic.
You cleared your throat and couldn’t stop yourself from speaking up, “Great. First you complained I wouldn’t get out of my bedchamber for years after losing Leo and now at last, I go out and have the courage to go back out into the world like you urged and begged me to.”
“I also took those stupid dancing lessons and look where it got me! It could have gotten me killed and it seems all you care about is the princess still being alive!” You continued, standing tall and brave.
“If only you cared so much about your daughter.” You spit and quickly leave without saying another word.
You ignored the yells of your full name, opening the door, and storming out. You heard voices behind you until they fully disappeared and you were further into the castle.
You were mindlessly walking around until you made it to your bedchamber. Maybe it wasn’t as mindless as you thought.
Time had passed on and you made your point across that you were beyond upset by ignoring them.
Maybe it was because deep down you had wished your life wasn’t like this. Full of unexpected danger and too many rules.
This life didn’t fit how you wanted to live.
You wanted to be carefree and not have to worry about a thing.
That whole week you practically only saw your bedchamber. You never left and they even blocked off your balcony — knowing that could’ve been your exit plan.
It was becoming tiring and boring but at least you had Kate to talk to.
You learned more about her and bonded a bit more.
You learned that her favorite color was purple and she was also an only child.
It was little things like that that made you realize maybe you weren’t all too different from your knight.
Another week had passed and you finally got to speak to your parents, who came up to your bedchamber themselves.
They claimed that the dance master had no help and you were free to roam around the castle, but only the castle.
Alas that was as close you’d get to freedom.
And of course, they didn’t acknowledge the real issue you had because they always did that.
Pretend everything was fine.
It was late at night and you were on your balcony, laying in your circular daybed, head on the mountain of pillows looking up at the sky.
It was mostly dark out but it was worth it because the stars were shining. They looked beautiful out and you wanted to spend your time watching them.
Kate was by the doors, seemingly doing the same thing but to the ones past the castle.
The ones above you were even more gorgeous.
“Come here Kate.” You said and pointed to the sky.
She instantly walked over and you patted the spot next to you. She hesitated for a second before she got on and laid down next to you.
“Aren’t they so pretty?” You sigh and she turns to look at you, “they are.”
You didn’t notice her stare, too focused on the stars that were so similar to shapes. “That one looks like a triangle.” You say and point, grinning.
“And that one looks like.. a tree!” You grin, making her laugh.
“I’m afraid you don’t know what trees are…” she jokes and you gasp, “that’s so rude.”
She laughs and nods, “if you say so.”
“That one looks like a squirrel.” She says, making you scoff, “a squir- wait I see it!”
“See!”
“What the- Did we take something?” You ask, pretending to fake worry.
She shakes her head then chuckles, “we did not.”
You smile then look to the left. There you spotted a one of a kind sight.
She turned as well, pointing up at the same time as you that your finger brushed against her hand. She quickly moved her hand then called it out first, “a heart.”
You nod and smile, “So beautiful.”
You sigh and sink into the pillows, looking around to find more of them.
“You really like star gazing huh?” She asks and you quickly nod, “I love it so much.”
“Every night is different and they’re just equally as bright as the last.” You smile, making her lips curve into a small smile.
“I wish I could travel anywhere, I want to see them from everywhere.” You exclaim before sighing, “Too bad I’m still not allowed out.”
“Where would you go if you could?” She asks and you turn to face her.
“Well first to the village, I like meeting my people and buying the delicious food.” You explain and she nods.
You hum before continuing, “Then… I’d go to the beautiful lake nearby, the water is crystal clear and it has a tall hill to jump into it.”
“Sounds like a fun plan.” She says and also turns to look at you.
“Where would you go?” You ask and she chuckles, “nowhere.”
“I’m where I want to be.” She adds softly and you raise an eyebrow, “that’s boring.”
She laughs and you grin, “c’mon, give me something.”
“Fine.” She groans, making you laugh.
She smiles then says, “There’s a lovely park near my parent’s house. Apple trees, strawberry bushes, and many flowers.”
“I used to pick the fruit over there and I’d watch my mom bake the most delicious desserts.” She adds and you gasp, “what was your favorite?”
She quickly smiled then answered, “She’d make these strawberry tartlets, they’d look like little pies and have small cut up strawberries on top. Sometimes when I was good she’d put chocolate syrup on top.”
“Please tell me you know how to make them.” You ask, wide eyed and now suddenly hungry.
“We are not making them right now.” She quickly says, making you pout, “why not?”
“It’s late- if anything you should already be asleep.” She replies and you scoff, “when has that stopped us before?”
“You’ve become a bad influence.” She jokes, making you snicker.
“Oh right- if I was really a bad influence we’d be at a tavern right now drinking, not looking at stars.” You say before gasping.
“A shooting star!!! Oh my god make a wish!” You yell and lay on your back.
Your eyes watched the star go from the left then to the far right and in your head you quickly wished for a happy ending like in the books you’ve been reading.
“What’d you wish for?” You ask and she grins, “I can’t tell you, that ruins the magic.”
“Fine! So… sleep it is then.” You say and jump up, going back inside while she follows you with a small smile on her face.

College was kicking your ass today. When you finally got home to your dorm, you were exhausted. Dragging your feet. You fought with your dorm key, grumbling to yourself when the door opened for you before you could get it. You half expected to see your roommate there but nope. Instead, you were met with your smiling girlfriend. Kate Bishop.
How did she-? Nevermind, it didn't matter to you how she snuck in. You're just glad she did. Before Kate can even get a word out, you were rushing into her arms. Bags dropping at your feet. Just clinging to her like your life depended on it. In some ways, it felt like it really did.
"Woah, woah-" Kate stumbled back slightly, but kept smiling and hugged you back just as tightly," you doing okay, princess?"
Kate didn't really need to be told the answer, she already knew. Your little head shake just confirmed it for her. She used one hand to pick up the bags you'd dropped, using the other to still hold you. Bringing the bags inside, Kate kicked the door closed with her foot and coaxed you over to your bed. Where Lucky was already cuddled up in the sheets. You didn't know how she got the dog in either. But you really didn't have the energy to figure it out or care.
You settled down into bed. When he felt your presence, Lucky lifted his head and rested it in your lap. With a soft smile, you gave him some head scratches. Earning you a very content little huff from the golden retriever.
"Okay, what do you wanna do? We could watch movies, cuddle, eat food, all the above-" Kate started rambling off ideas. You looked at her, your eyes filled with nothing but love. Sometimes you couldn't believe that she was really yours.
"Mmm... just come cuddle and gimme kisses before my roommate gets back," you held your hands out, making little needy grabs.
Kate laughed and joined you on the bed, cuddling right up next to your side. Placing loving kisses to your neck," your roommate won't be back tonight. I bought her a fancy hotel room so she'd give us the dorm."
You raised an eyebrow, stifling a laugh and shaking your head," rich people."
"Hey! I'm one of the good ones!" Kate protested, not really offended. Just playing along with you. That managed to get your laughter out and now it was Kate's turn to watch you with pure love.
At some point, you and Kate moved over to the couch so Lucky could sleep in the bed. There the two of you spent the next couple hours just relaxing, watching movies, eating snacks. During the second movie watch, you were more focused on Kate at this point. Admiring how relaxed she looked against you. The way her head rested on your shoulder, eyes half lidded with sleep...
"Katie?" You murmured, getting her attention.
"Hmmm?"
"If you're not too tired..." a small, teasing grin crossed your lips and she knew exactly what it meant.
"You kidding? I'm never too tired for you, whatever you need, baby," she teased right back. Adjusting herself so she was now sitting up, straddling your lap. Kate's arms loosely wrapped around your neck. Previously tired eyes laced with need and desire.
"I love you," you replied, your own eyes falling to her lips.
"I love you most," Kate smiled, one of her hands moving from your neck. Lightly trailing your skin before fining its place, cupped against your jawline. You leaned into her touch. Eyes closing briefly as Kate's lips met yours in a passionate kiss.
Through the kiss, Kate's hands moved to get your top off. Parting from your lips only for a moment so she could slip your shirt over your head; before her lips crashed back to yours. A muffled moan escaped you.
It wasn't long before the two of you were naked, laying on top of each other on the couch. You were over top of Kate, your lips working their way down her neck. Leaving marks in their wake. The sounds coming from Kate only further encouraged you. Not that you really needed any encouragement, though.
Your lips found their way to Kate's breasts. Tongue swirling the nipple before latching onto it. Sucking gently. Fuck, Kate was in complete bliss right now. She didn't even realize it until the words were out of her mouth, but she was already begging for more.
"God, please... baby- I- I need-" Kate stuttered between moans, eyes rolling back. The action made a satisfied hum leave your mouth, creating a little vibration sensation against Kate's skin.
"As you wish," you teased. Lifting yourself to give her a kiss, then readjusting your position. Positioning yourself down by her core. Moving just an inch closer, your tongue brushed Kate's clit. Kate whimpered at the feeling, her back arching in response.
Your hands reached out to her hips, gently pulling the hero back down to the couch's surface. Once Kate settled, your tongue played with her clit. Sucking, gently pulling. Bringing your girlfriend closer and closer to her release.
Kate's moans responded to your every movement; and as she got more breathy, whimpery, you could tell she was almost there.
"That's it, baby..." you praised, lips barely touching her skin as you spoke," you're doing so well."
The only response Kate could get out was a whine, you couldn't help but smile at that. God, she was cute as hell. Especially with that little face she made when she finally released. Her cum hitting your tongue.
You guided her through the orgasm until her body settled, once calm you lifted yourself and laid across her body. You pulled Kate into a deep kiss, allowing her to taste the mess she made of your mouth.
"I love you," your voice came out soft, a quiet murmur against Kate's lips.
Kate matched your smile with a lazy one of her own, clearly tired and spent," I love you most."

It was a typical night for you. Well, maybe not typical, but you liked to think so. You’d just finished up a mission with the team and were headed to your favourite bar for some much-needed downtime. The kind of evening that promised a few drinks, some laughs, and the usual post-mission chit-chat. There was something different in the air tonight. Something electric.
It could’ve been the fact that you had been spending an alarming amount of time with both Kate and Yelena lately. There was something about the way they looked at you. You knew them well enough to tell when someone was acting off.
You could feel the way they both looked at you. That lingering gaze from Yelena, sharp as a knife, but with a softness that wasn’t there before. Kate, oh, Kate was impossible to miss. She was always energetic and full of life, but recently she seemed to go out of her way to brush past you, lean a little closer, laugh a little harder at your jokes.
You were so aware of it.
Honestly, you couldn’t tell if you were being oblivious or if they were both just really bad at hiding their feelings. Whatever the case, you were now getting drinks with both of them regularly. And you were enjoying it, maybe a little too much.
“Cheers,” you say, raising your glass to Kate, who’s already halfway through hers.
Kate grins, her usual sarcastic smirk curling at the edges of her lips. “Cheers,” she mimics, her voice a playful sing-song. “You’re looking especially cute tonight.”
You chuckle, rolling your eyes but unable to hide the small blush creeping up your neck. “You always say that. It’s getting a little obvious, Kate.”
She raises an eyebrow, clearly pleased with herself. “Well, I’m not the only one who thinks so, am I?”
You glance over at Yelena, sitting across from you with her arms crossed, her eyes glinting as she watches you. She doesn’t say anything, but you notice the way her lips twitch at the corner. There’s a tension in the air that you’re absolutely aware of.
You’re used to it by now, the way they both seem to be vying for your attention, just a little. Yelena might be a little more subtle about it, but Kate was an open book. She wasn’t even trying to hide it, which, in all fairness, you found absolutely charming.
You finish your drink and stand up. “Alright, I’m gonna hit the bathroom real quick. Don’t steal my seat.”
Kate pouts, sticking her lower lip out comically. “If you’re gone for too long, I might. You can just gonna sit in my lap.”
You roll your eyes at her antics, trying to ignore the way your heart skips a beat. You walk off to the bathroom, the whole time aware of Yelena and Kate watching you from their seats. It’s fine. You’re used to it by now.
When you return, you find them talking to each other, heads leaned close. They stop as soon as they see you, both of them giving you that look. You know the one. That look that says they’re both thinking about you, wondering what exactly the other one is thinking. You’d be lying if you said it didn’t turn your stomach into knots.
You slide back into your seat, pretending not to notice the way their gazes linger on you for just a beat too long.
“So,” you say, trying to break the awkward silence that’s somehow crept between you all. “I was thinking—”
Before you can finish, Kate interrupts. “So, I was talking to Yelena, and we both agree that you’re kind of the worst at keeping secrets.”
Yelena shoots Kate a sideways glance, but there’s something almost guilty in her expression. “We don’t need to talk about that.”
“No, no,” Kate insists, a grin dancing on her lips. “We do. Because I need to know what’s going on between you two.”
Yelena raises an eyebrow, her face unreadable. “What do you mean?”
Kate shrugs, all innocence. “Oh, come on. It’s obvious.”
The words hang between you all, a little too heavy. Your heart skips. “What is?”
Kate looks at you like you’ve lost your mind. “Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about. You definitely know.” Her gaze shifts to Yelena for a split second, and then back to you. “It’s, like, so obvious. You two have been practically spending all your time together. It’s kinda cute.”
You look at Yelena, who’s now staring down into her drink, clearly trying to avoid making eye contact. She doesn’t look upset, but there’s a tightness in her posture that’s making your heart race.
“Wait,” you start, your voice quiet. “You think we—?”
Kate grins widely. “I mean, duh. You two are definitely into each other. It’s, like, impossible to miss.”
Yelena’s head jerks up at that, her eyes widening. “Wait, you think—?”
Before she can finish, the door to the bar swings open, and in walks Alexei, of all people, looking like he just got into some kind of ridiculously loud argument with someone. But you’re too caught up in the moment to care. You glance between Kate and Yelena again, and then it hits you.
Both of them are jealous.
You could see it in their eyes, the way they fidget in their seats. The subtle tension between them. It wasn’t just about you anymore. They were aware of the other’s feelings, and now it was too late for them to pretend they weren’t feeling something.
“So, what now?” you ask, a little too casually. “You two going to fight it out?”
Both of them blink at you. Then Kate laughs nervously, rubbing the back of her neck. “You— uh, you seriously think I’d fight Yelena? Nah, I’ll just—”
Yelena’s not even listening to Kate anymore. Her gaze is locked on you, and her lips part as she leans forward, the words coming out before she can stop them. “I— you’re serious about this, yes? About both of us?”
You raise your eyebrows. “Uh, yeah. It’s pretty obvious, isn’t it?”
The two of them stare at you like you’ve just confessed to robbing a bank. You chuckle nervously, watching them both fidget in their seats. “What? You think I haven’t noticed?”
You feel your pulse racing as you take in the way their eyes narrow at you. Both of them are waiting for something, maybe an answer to a question neither of them wants to ask. And for once, you don’t hesitate.
“You’re both into me,” you say simply, leaning back in your seat. “And, honestly, I’m into both of you.”
They look at each other like the world’s just flipped upside down.
Kate speaks first, her voice a little breathless. “Wait... so you’re not picking one of us?”
You can’t help but laugh, shaking your head. “No. Why pick one when I can have both of you?”
There’s a stunned silence before both of them break out into nervous laughter.
“You really think that’s an option?” Yelena asks, eyes wide. “Like, all three of us?”
“Well, yeah,” you say, leaning forward with a grin. “Why not? We’re all into each other. We’ve all been spending so much time together. I think we need to stop pretending like this isn’t happening.”
Kate looks at Yelena. Yelena looks at Kate. The realisation dawns on both of them at the same time, and they both burst into laughter, that nervous kind, but genuine.
“You’re serious, aren’t you?” Kate asks, still giggling. “Like, you’re really suggesting—”
“Yes,” you say, grinning. “All three of us. Why not?”
The tension that had been so thick just moments ago now feels lighter, like a weight has been lifted. Yelena shrugs, looking at you both with that cocky grin she always wears.
“Well, I guess we’ll see what happens next,” she says.
You’re just happy everything’s out in the open. Finally.
Something from my old old drafts from years ago, so old its in past tense lmao; a little offering to prove I’m attempting to be more active on here
Quiet Night
“Hey” the word was soft and low, almost a whisper as it drifted through the quiet of your shared apartment.
“Hmm?” You hummed, turning your attention away from your book and looking up just as Kate plopped down on the couch next to you with Lucky following at her heels. The raven haired woman moved close, snuggling herself up to your side and resting her head on your shoulder, placing a soft kiss there.
“You alright, love? You’ve been quiet today.” She looked up at you with those deep, loving ocean eyes and you saw a small worried cease between her brows.
The fact that she cared so deeply about even the little things was one of the reasons you loved her so much. It was just who Kate was, it was in her nature to be observant and to care for others.
You offered her a small smile. For a second you thought about just saying you’re tired, which you were, but when she looked at you like that, you knew you were putty in her hands. Plus while you do normally tend to be on the quieter side, being as quiet as you were today definitely signaled to your girlfriend in some way that something was off and you both knew it.
“Sorry, Katie, I guess I’m not really feeling the best today. My throats killing me.” You admitted and for a second her features relaxed, glad it wasn’t something too serious, but then her face turned back to worry, a bit of sympathy along with it this time.
She turned her body more towards you, her eyes soft, and cupped your face gently in her hands. You leaned into her cool touch and she mentally noted the unusual warmth of your skin.
“Aw baby,” her words were soft than a whisper, “ you don’t have to be sorry for not feeling well. Thank you for telling me.” She hummed sincerely and kissed your forehead both to comfort you and to double check your fever.
“You do feel and little too warm.” Her soft lips murmured as she pulled away.
“I think you’re definitely coming down with something love.” Kate’s thumbs grazed along your flushed cheeks for a moment before she stood up and offered you her hand.
“C’mon.” She smiled brightly in the way she knew you loved. “We’re getting you to bed, I’ll make you some tea, look for some meds and maybe some lozenges and we can snuggle and binge something until you fall asleep.” She spoke, her joyful, sweet energy making your heat thump as you intertwined your hand with hers and let her pull you into a warm, loving hug.
The two of you laughed a little as Lucky tried to get between the two of you, nuzzling his wet nose into you hands. You pulled away and smile at your girlfriend.
“That sounds perfect, Katie” You kissed her cheek in gratitude.
She smiled back and told you to get in bed and pull up something to watch.
Lucky followed you and you patted his head before getting under the blankets and stretching out as you leaned against the cool pillows. After reveling in the soft sheets for a moment, you sat up, grabbed your laptop, rearranged some pillows, and settled yourself comfortably against the bed board.
You opened your favorite streaming service and clicked on the show that you and Kate were currently hooked on. You waited for her but after a few minutes you yawned of boredom and pressed play on the first episode.
“Okay babe, here we g—hey!” Kate padded into the room a couple minutes later and pouted the second she heard the show already playing.
You let out a small chuckled which turned into a short cough that had Kate rushing to your side. She set a tray on her bedside table and handed you a glass of water which you gratefully gulped down.
You smirked at her and she raised an eyebrow. “I knew you’d pout.” Your face turned smug and prideful as she glared playfully at you while crawling into bed next to you.
You smiled. “Don’t worry love, it’s just the first episode.” You showed her the screen which made her relax since the two of you were already on season two.
Your girlfriend huffed, slightly annoyed at herself for not knowing what was playing since you had rewatched it like four times already.
“So…” Kate started as she snuggled up to you, wrapping her strong arms around you. “…allergies or cold?” She asked even though she was sure you had a fever.
You had been suffering from your spring hay fever for the past couple weeks, and although it had rained multiple days in a row, effectively giving you a small break from the sneezing, itchy eyes and dry throat, and slight hives, she could tell they were still bothering you enough.
“….I’m thinking both.” You grumbled as your buried your face against her shirt and let out an annoyed huff.
Kate kissed your hair as her hand started rubbing your shoulder soothingly. “Aw I’m sorry baby, let’s get some medicine in you, yeah?”
You nodded in agreement and let her measure out the correct dosage of cold meds and the second you took it she immediately hugged you right back into her side and settled your laptop where the both of you could see it easily.
“Just a quiet night, you and me. Yeah?” Kate hummed, hand already starting to run through your hair again.
You settled in impossibly closer as she clicked play on the screen and the opening credits whirled to life.
“Yeah…and Lucky” You smiled warmly remembering the sweet dog curled up at your feet.
Kate let out a small chuckle, her chest rumbling comfortingly beneath you, then she kissed your head once more.

The storm had been building all night. You felt it in the way the air shifted, the pressure in your chest before the first crack of thunder shook the apartment. By the time lightning split the sky wide open, the storm was in full swing—rain battering the windows like fists, thunder so loud you swore it rattled through your bones.
Kate, of course, loved it. She sat by the window with her knees pulled up, hair mussed from the long day, face glowing every time lightning lit the room.
“Look at this,” she murmured, eyes tracing the jagged streaks in the clouds. “It’s like a free light show.”
You tried to smile from your cocoon on the couch, blanket pulled up tight under your chin. Your chest squeezed, heart racing harder than you wanted to admit.
“Yeah,” you managed, but your voice came out too flat. “It’s… cool.”
Kate’s brow twitched, like she’d clocked the hesitation, but she let it go. Another thunderclap shook the windows, and you jumped before you could stop yourself.
This time, she moved. Sliding off the windowsill, she padded over and crouched in front of you. “Hey,” she said softly, head tilting. “You’re scared, aren’t you?”
Heat crawled up your neck. You shook your head too quickly. “No. Just startled me.”
Kate gave you one of her warm, knowing smiles—the kind that said she wasn’t buying a word. “Mmhm. Totally fine,” she teased, tapping the blanket. “Scoot over, storma-phobe.”
You sighed but shifted, and she slipped under the blanket, curling against your side like she belonged there. The couch dipped with her weight, her arm sliding easily around your waist.
Before either of you could say anything else, Lucky padded in, tail wagging, sensing the tension. With zero hesitation, he hopped up and wedged himself against your other side, heavy head landing in your lap with a satisfied thump.
“See?” Kate said, grinning. “Lucky knows who needs the most cuddles.”
You rolled your eyes but your fingers were already sinking into Lucky’s fur, scratching behind his ears. His tail thumped happily against the couch.
Kate leaned into your shoulder, watching you with a soft, adoring look. “So unfair,” she mumbled. “You’re giving him head scratches but not me.”
You smirked. “He earns them by not laughing at me when I’m terrified of loud sky noises.”
Kate gasped. “First of all, I would never laugh at you. Second of all…” She flopped her head dramatically into your free hand. “Head scritches, please.”
You tried to look annoyed—classic orange-cat routine—but your hand automatically moved, scratching through her hair. Kate made an exaggerated happy noise, leaning in closer until you were trapped between her and Lucky.
“You’re ridiculous,” you muttered, but there was no heat in it.
“Ridiculously comforting,” she corrected, tilting her head so you hit just the right spot.
Another rumble rolled overhead. You stiffened, but Kate only pressed a quick kiss to your temple before untangling herself just enough to stand.
“Don’t move,” she ordered gently. “I’m making tea. Storms are way less scary when you’ve got something warm in your hands.”
By the time she came back, she was balancing two mugs. She handed one over, then tucked herself right back against you, draping the blanket over all three of you—Lucky included.
“You know,” Kate said casually, “if it helps, I could shoot an arrow into the clouds. Bet the thunder would think twice about messing with us.”
A laugh slipped out of you despite the tightness in your chest. “You can’t shoot the weather.”
Kate gasped. “Excuse you—I can shoot anything. Clouds don’t stand a chance.”
Lucky gave a loud huff, like he agreed with her nonsense. You shook your head, smiling despite yourself. “You’re both ridiculous.”
“Ridiculously comforting,” she corrected, pressing a kiss to the top of your head.
Another rumble rolled overhead. You stiffened instinctively, but Kate’s arm tightened, her palm rubbing slow circles along your side. “Hey. Focus on me,” she whispered. “Not the storm. Just me.”
Her words, her warmth—they worked. Slowly, your heartbeat began to ease. The storm was still there, loud and chaotic, but wrapped in Kate, it felt less like a threat and more like background noise.
Kate kept talking, filling the space with random little stories and half-serious jokes, her voice low and soothing. Every so often, she leaned in to press a kiss against your temple, your hair, your cheek.
Your eyes grew heavy.
“You falling asleep on me?” she teased gently.
“Mhm,” you admitted, words slurring. “You’re comfy.”
“Damn right I am.” She kissed your forehead, voice softening. “Go ahead. I’ll keep watch.”
“You don’t have to—”
“I want to,” Kate interrupted, firm but tender. “I like being your safe place.”
You let go after that, sleep tugging you under as the storm raged on.
Kate stayed awake. She pulled the blanket higher over you, her hand resting steady against your back. Every time thunder cracked, she glanced down, but you only stirred faintly, soothed again by her presence.
Hours passed. Lightning faded to weak flashes. Rain softened to a drizzle. By the time dawn painted pale light across the window, the storm had nearly gone.
Kate looked down at you—curled against her chest, hair messy, breathing deep and even. Her heart squeezed.
“See?” she whispered, brushing a kiss to your hair. “Told you I’d protect you from the scary sky noises.”
You murmured something incoherent, nuzzling closer in your sleep. Kate smiled, pulling the blanket snug around you both.
The storm had passed. But Kate stayed, wide awake, keeping her promise to hold you through it all.
