Youichi wasn’t stupid. He had seen the girl’s legs shake at the end of her Lightspeed Run, but…
He’s seen resolve in her eyes too.
And Kami, wasn’t it different to play- or prepare to play- with a teammate who wanted to be on the field! Usually he’d have to blackmail and terrify the player in question so they’d obey, but Youichi hadn’t said a word, and he could already tell Kobayakawa Sena was planning to improve herself.
He’d offer her a training menu anyway. He knew what she needed, and how to get there. That she was resolved to do it herself only made this even better.
A grin curled his lips as he watched his team. It would take work, but....
He had a chance now. They had a chance now. Not...much of one, not missing so many permanent players, who knew what they were doing, but-
But it was better than any percent they had had in previous years.
Ryoukan set Kobayakawa down from where he had been tossing her into the air, and Youichi eyed her legs as they shook under her weight. Still...she didn’t fall.

...Youichi felt a bit impressed.
Was this what his Pops meant, when he talked about before?
His Pops had met Mama when they were teens. She’d been 14 and he had been 16. Some dick had been shoving Mama around, and Pops said no matter how many times she got shoved down, she got back up and faced them.
Pops said he hadn’t seen anything like her. She was tiny and obviously didn’t work out, or know how to throw a punch. She’d still stood up in front of the guys ganging up on her, who were twice her size and held her ground.
Pops had interfered of course, he was a gentleman, but he always told Youichi it was that tenacity and determination that had initially brought his mother to Pops’ attention.
That Mama had later that same day- using skills his Pops had taught her after the confrontation- punched his father in the face for ‘being a jerk’ had only solidified that attention.
Youichi tilted his head.
Perhaps...he would introduce Kobayakawa to his Pops training methods. She’d hate him by the end, but her stamina would skyrocket in the shortest time possible.
Youichi grinned. Time to see how far that resolve of hers reached.
